Parliamentary elections were held in Madagascar on 17 May 1998. AREMA, the party led by President Didier Ratsiraka, emerged as the largest faction in the National Assembly, winning 63 of the 150 seats. Movement For The Progress Of Madagascar
The Movement for the Progress of Madagascar (MFM - Mpitolona ho an'ny Fandrosoan'i Madagasikara) is a political party in Madagascar. The Chairman of the party is Manandafy Rakotonirina. The party was founded on 27 December 1972 as the Party for Proletarian Power (MFM - Mpitolona ho amin'ny Fanjakana ny Madinika). At the time it was a left-wing opposition to the military regime that had taken power the same year. It remained in opposition during the Ratsiraka regime and was part of the movement that forced him to give up his power in 1991. It also backed Marc Ravalomanana against Ratsiraka in the December 2001 presidential election and helped in persuading him to not accept the first official result but proclaim himself as the winner. The party has converted to liberalism and changed its name. It is now an observer member of the Liberal International, which it joined at the latter's Marrakesh Congress in 2006. Elections In Madagascar
Madagascar elects on the national level a head of state – the president – and a legislature. The president is elected for a five-year term by the people, by absolute majority through a two-round system. The Parliament has two chambers. The National Assembly (''Antenimieram-Pirenena/Assemblée Nationale'') has 151 members, elected for a five-year term in single-member and two-member constituencies. In single-member constituencies, representatives are elected by simple majority, in the two-member constituencies, closed party lists are used, with the two seats distributed using a highest averages method. The Senate (''Sénat'') has 33 members, 22 members elected by the regions by provincial electors, and 11 members appointed by the president, all for 5 year terms. The Malagasy Revolutionary Party, better known by its Malagasy acronym AREMA (from ), is a political party in Madagascar. It was the ruling party of the Democratic Republic of Madagascar, a Marxist–Leninist one-party socialist state, from 1976 to 1992. Name "AREMA" was originally an acronym derived from the party's Malagasy and French names: () in Malagasy and () in French. Sometime around 2001, the party changed its Malagasy name to () and its French name to ().
