Mal Bross
Matthew A. Bross (December 7, 1903 – February 8, 1989) was an American football back for the Los Angeles Wildcats of the American Football League (AFL) and the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for Gonzaga. Biography Bross was born on December 7, 1904 in Great Falls, Montana. Career Bross played at the collegiate level at Gonzaga University. Following his graduation, he played professionally with Ernie Nevers Traveling Circus, a organization that involved two football teams which traveled throughout the South. The following year, Bross played with the Green Bay Packers during the 1927 NFL season. Previously he had played with the Los Angeles Wildcats of the American Football League. Running Back
A running back (RB) is a member of the offensive backfield in gridiron football. There are usually one or two running backs on the field for a given play, depending on the offensive formation. 1927 NFL Season
The 1927 NFL season was the eighth regular season of the National Football League. Prior to the season, the league decided to eliminate the financially weaker teams. As a result, the league dropped from 22 to 12 teams. The league absorbed many players and one franchise (the New York Yankees) from the defunct American Football League. Wilfrid Smith in the ''Chicago Tribune'' wrote that "the reduction formed a more compact circuit and provided better competition." Smith opined that the "outstanding feature" of the 1927 NFL season was the debut of Benny Friedman who became one of the game's "best drawing cards" and proved that professional football could support itself in Cleveland. Although five black players participated in the 1926 season (including future Hall of Famer Fritz Pollard), none played during the 1927 season. Spokane Chronicle
The ''Spokane Daily Chronicle'' is a daily digital newspaper in Spokane, Washington. It was founded as a weekly paper in 1881 and grew into an afternoon daily, competing with ''The Spokesman-Review'', which was formed from the merger of two competing papers. In 1897, the ''Chronicle'' was acquired by William H. Cowles and became part of the Cowles Publishing Company. Cowles already owned ''The Spokesman-Review''. Both papers operated out of the Spokesman-Review Building until 1921, but were kept independent; ''The Spokesman-Review'' had a Republican political slant, and the two papers maintained a friendly rivalry. The ''Chronicle'' moved into its own building next door in 1921. The following year the ''Chronicle'' started radio station KOE, setting up an antenna on the taller ''Review'' building.
