Makokoba
Makokoba is a suburb of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. It was the first black African township in the city. The suburb is named after the actions of Mr Fallon, the Native Commissioner, who used walk around with a stick. The name comes from the word "ukukhokhoba" which in the local Ndebele language means "bending and walking with a stick'. It was referring to Mr Fallon as "the little old man who walks with a stick". The word actually describes the noise of the stick hitting the ground ko-ko-ko or the doors. Association footballers Adam, Madinda and Peter Ndlovu come from Makokoba, as do music, arts, dance and theatre group Amakhosi Theatre and dance and theatre group Siyaya. Amakhosi Theatre
Amakhosi Theatre Productions (also known as Amakhosi Academy of Performing Arts) is a Zimbabwean theatre company based at the Amakhosi Township Square Cultural Centre in Makokoba township, Bulawayo. The company was established under its current name in 1981 by Cont Mhlanga,Dube, C. (1992). "Amakhosi Theatre: Ako-Bulawayo". ''TDR'', 36 (2), p. 44 and has since become an influential cultural institution in Zimbabwe, playing a role not only in stimulating the performance arts scene, but also in examining critical issues in politics, health, women's rights and development with urban and rural communities through a method of active audience engagement. Bulawayo
Bulawayo (, ; Ndebele: ''Bulawayo'') is the second largest city in Zimbabwe, and the largest city in the country's Matabeleland region. The city's population is disputed; the 2022 census listed it at 665,940, while the Bulawayo City Council claimed it to be about 1.2 million. Bulawayo covers an area of about in the western part of the country, along the Matsheumhlope River. Along with the capital Harare, Bulawayo is one of two cities in Zimbabwe that is also a province. Bulawayo was founded by a group led by Gundwane Ndiweni around 1840 as the kraal of Mzilikazi, the Ndebele king and was known as Gibixhegu. His son, Lobengula, succeeded him in the 1860s, and changed the name to kobulawayo and ruled from Bulawayo until 1893, when the settlement was captured by British South Africa Company soldiers during the First Matabele War. Peter Ndlovu
Peter Ndlovu (born 25 February 1973) is a Zimbabwean football coach and former professional player who was most recently the team manager at South African Premier Division side Mamelodi Sundowns. As a player he was as a striker from 1988 until 2011, notably spending time in England and more specifically in the Premier League with Coventry City as well as in the Football League for Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town, and Sheffield United. The rest of his career was spent in his native Africa with Highlanders, Mamelodi Sundowns, Thanda Royal Zulu, Highfield United and Black Mambas. He was capped 81 times for his country, scoring 37 goals. Since retirement, Ndlovu has moved into coaching and has worked as assistant manager of Zimbabwe, before returning to Mamelodi as the club's team manager. Siyaya
''Siyaya'' (sometimes known as ''Siyaya Arts'') are a music, dance and theatre group from Makokoba, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe Zimbabwe (), officially the Republic of Zimbabwe, is a landlocked country located in Southeast Africa, between the Zambezi and Limpopo Rivers, bordered by South Africa to the south, Botswana to the south-west, Zambia to the north, and Mozam .... Origin Siyaya formed in 1989 and were originally known as Nostalgic Actors and Singers Alliance (NASA). They started with 5 members and were led by Mike Sobiko. The members of the group have changed a lot over time, with many former members going on to other, similar projects. The line-up now consists of 13 members under the leadership of Saimon Mambazo Phiri. On their 10th anniversary they changed their name to Siyaya (meaning 'on the move'). Northern Ndebele Language
Northern Ndebele (), also called Ndebele, isiNdebele saseNyakatho, Zimbabwean Ndebele or North Ndebele, associated with the term Matabele, is a Bantu language spoken by the Northern Ndebele people which belongs to the Nguni group of languages. As a start and to give some context, Ndebele is a term used to refer to a collection of many different African cultures in Zimbabwe. It perhaps by default became a 'language' (for lack of better word) spoken predominantly by the descendants of Mzilikazi. As a language, it is by no means similar to the Ndebele language spoken in kwaNdebele in South Africa although, like many Nguni dialects, some words will be shared. Many of the natives that were colonized by the Matabele were assimilated into Mzilikazi's kingdom to create a version of isiZulu. Adam Ndlovu
Adam Ndlovu (26 June 1970 – 16 December 2012) was a footballer, who played as a striker. During his club career, he played for Highlanders, SC Kriens, SR Delémont, FC Zürich, Moroka Swallows, Dynamos and Free State Stars, and was also a member of the Zimbabwe national team. Madinda Ndlovu
Madinda Ndlovu (born 2 May 1965) is a Zimbabwean former footballer and manager currently in charge of Botswana Premier League club Gaborone United. He is generally considered one of the greatest Zimbabwean players of all time. After retiring Ndlovu began his managerial career as head coach of his boyhood club Highlanders in 1998. He first came to Botswana as the manager of Township Rollers in 2005 but lasted only two seasons before joining fellow Botswana Premier League club Nico United, helping them to a highest-ever league finish.
