Mak Joon Wah
Dr. Mak Joon Wah is a Malaysian physician. He is an expert on tropical and parasitic diseases and has published over 350 scientific papers. He is Professor of Pathology (the equivalent of a named chair in North America) and Vice-President of the International Medical University (IMU). He has formerly been Director of the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) and has worked as a consultant to the World Health Organization. He was Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Lymphatic Filariasis. He was Professor of Pathology at the Universiti Putra Malaysia for three years before joining IMU. He was elected President of Malaysian Society of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine in 1982 was the founding Editor of its Journal, ''Tropical Biomedicine'', from 1985 to 1987. Filariasis
Filariasis is a parasitic disease caused by an infection with roundworms of the Filarioidea type. These are spread by blood-feeding insects such as black flies and mosquitoes. They belong to the group of diseases called helminthiases. These parasites exist in the wild in subtropical parts of southern Asia, Africa, the South Pacific, and parts of South America. One does not acquire them in temperate areas like Europe or the United States. Eight known filarial worms have humans as a definitive host. An academy (Attic Greek: Ἀκαδήμεια; Koine Greek Ἀκαδημία) is an institution of secondary or tertiary higher learning (and generally also research or honorary membership). The name traces back to Plato's school of philosophy, founded approximately 385 BC at Akademia, a sanctuary of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and skill, north of Athens, Greece. Etymology The word comes from the ''Academy'' in ancient Greece, which derives from the Athenian hero, ''Akademos''. Outside the city walls of Athens, the gymnasium was made famous by Plato as a center of learning.
