Maire De Yanaon
A French Metropolitan Decree, dated 12 March 1880 adopted a six-year term of office for Mayors (''Maire''), municipal councillors (''Conseil municipaux'') and commune panchayats (''commune (France), communes''). Thus French India has seen a French system of municipal administration. In the past, municipal administration was virtually the pivot of the whole administrative machinery in French India. It had several features that could serve as a role model for hassle-free administration. Then a total of 10 communes were formed in which Yanaon became one commune with a strength of 12 Municipal Councillors (''conseillers municipaux''). First elections were held on 30 May 1880. The Panchayat raj is a political system, originating from the Indian subcontinent, found mainly in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. Bezawada Bapa Naidou
Bezawada Bapanaya Naidou Jr was a grandson of Bezawada Bapanaya Sr., the first Mayor of Yanam, and was himself the mayor from 1925 to 1930. He was one of the two powerful political leaders in Yanam during French rule. It was told that he was very soft-natured person and a vaishnavite. He was a humble and powerful politician in his time. Kamichetty Venougopala Rao Naidu better known as ''The Grand Old Man of Yanaon'' was Mayor and MLA of Yanaon during French rule in first half of 20th century. He was one of the two powerful political leaders in Yanam during French rule. His opponent was Bezawada Bapa Naidou, the first mayor of Yanam. After death of Bapa Naidou, he became Mayor of Yanam (Maire de Yanaon) and even his family became very dominant in Yanam politics for at least 50 years thence. Legacy of Kamichetty family He was hornoured with ''Grade de chevalier'' in 1931. His son's wife Kamichetty Savithiry became Conseiller Municipal from Kankalapet and later became MLA of Yanam. Monsieur Samatam Krishnayya (Samatam Kistaya) (Yanam c. 1875 – 13 June 1954) was a poet, historian and ayurvedic doctor. He wrote many books in Telugu. He was a loyal pro-French politician. Life During 1954, Monsieur Maddimsetti fled from Yanam to join pro-merger group, which brought anger in its people that led to pillage of his home. Then a 78-year-old, Monsieur Samatam Krouschnaya became the Mayor of Yanam (interim) who was the lone pro-French leader to fight against pro-merger leaders. Yanam Municipality (''Municipalité de Yanaon'') was created by a French Metropolitan Decree dated 12 March 1880. Yanaon municipality had 12 seats (''Sièges''). Citizens from each ward elect one representative for Yanam Municipal Council (''Conseil Municipal de Yanaon)''. The term of office is six years. General information The Yanam Municipality is acting according to the Pondicherry Municipalities Act of 1973 which had been introduced by the Government and in effect since 26-01-1974.
