The Maintal–Dörnigheim Ferry, also known as the Mühlheim am Main to Dörnigheim Ferry, was a vehicular cable ferry across the Main river in Hesse, Germany. The ferry crossed between the Dörnigheim district of the town of Maintal, on the right bank of the river, and Mühlheim am Main opposite. On June 25, 2020, the ferry was permanently retired. Main (river)
The Main () is the longest tributary of the Rhine. It rises as the White Main in the Fichtel Mountains of northeastern Bavaria and flows west through central Germany for to meet the Rhine below Rüsselsheim, Hesse. Dörnigheim is the biggest district of the town of Maintal in Hesse, Germany. It is situated on the right, or northern, bank of the Main river. History Dörnigheim's existence was first documented in the year 793. According to a document Wolfbodo donated the Maingau including "Turinchheim" (old name of the city) to the Abbot of Lorsch. The proprietorship was shared between the counts of Hanau and the bishops of Mainz.
