Mainliner (band)
Mainliner are a noise rock band from Tokyo, Japan. The band was formed in 1995 by guitarist Kawabata Makoto and bassist Asahito Nanjo with the intention of creating a new form of psychedelic music. They released four studio albums before the members went on hiatus to pursue other musical interests. On December 20, 2011, Kawabata Makoto, Koji Shimura and newcomer Kawabe Taigen began recording material. The music from these sessions was released on May 13, 2013, on the new album ''Revelation Space''. The band intended to take part in a world tour in support of the new album, starting with the UK that September. Noise Rock
Noise rock (sometimes called noise punk) is a noise music, noise-oriented style of experimental rock that spun off from punk rock in the 1980s. Drawing on movements such as minimal music, minimalism, industrial music, and New York hardcore, artists indulge in extreme levels of distortion through the use of electric guitars and, less frequently, electronic instrumentation, either to provide percussive sounds or to contribute to the overall arrangement. Some groups are tied to song structures, such as Sonic Youth. Although they are not representative of the entire genre, they helped popularize noise rock among alternative rock audiences by incorporating melodies into their droning textures of sound, which set a template that numerous other groups followed. ''Revelation Space'' is a 2000 science fiction novel by Welsh author Alastair Reynolds. It was the first novel (but not first published work of fiction) set in Reynolds's eponymous universe. ''Imaginative Plain'' is the fourth studio album by Mainliner, released on April 25, 2001 by P.S.F. Records. Reception In writing for the ''Chicago Tribune'', Kevin M. Williams noted that the music sounded as if "The Stooges were jamming with the MC5, with a guest appearance from Jimi Hendrix, and they've lost the set list, so they're just rocking out" and that " Kawabata makes a strong case for a slot in the shredder hall of fame, laying down sheets of precise, note-rich frenzy from his severely overdriven guitar."
