Zigeunerweisen (film)
is a 1980 independent Japanese film directed by Seijun Suzuki and based on Hyakken Uchida's novel, ''Disk of Sarasate''. It takes its title from a gramophone recording of Pablo de Sarasate's violin composition, ''Zigeunerweisen'', which features prominently in the story. The film makes the first part of Suzuki's Taishō Roman Trilogy, followed by ''Kagero-za'' (1981) and ''Yumeji'' (1991), surrealistic psychological dramas and ghost stories linked by style, themes and the Taishō period (1912-1926) setting. All three were produced by Genjiro Arato. When exhibitors declined to screen the film, Arato screened it himself in an inflatable, mobile tent to great success. The Makioka Sisters (film)
is a 1983 drama film directed by Kon Ichikawa based on the serial novel of the same name by Jun'ichirō Tanizaki. It depicts the pre-war lifestyle of the wealthy Makioka family from Osaka with parallels to the seasons in Japan. Plot The story takes place in Japan primarily during the late 1930s (Shōwa period). Kunio Yanagita (柳田 國男, Yanagita Kunio, July 31, 1875 – August 8, 1962) was a Japanese author, scholar, and folklorist. He began his career as a bureaucrat, but developed an interest in rural Japan and its folk traditions. This led to a change in his career. His pursuit of this led to his eventual establishment of Japanese native folkloristics, or ''minzokugaku'', as an academic field in Japan. As a result, he is often considered to be the father of modern Japanese folklore studies.
