State Route 231 (SR 231) is a state highway located in Cumberland County in southeastern Maine. It begins at State Route 115 in North Yarmouth and runs north to New Gloucester, where it ends at U.S. Route 202, State Route 4 and State Route 100. The highway functions as an eastern bypass of Gray. Route description SR 231 begins at SR 115 in North Yarmouth, where SR 115 turns northwest on Gray Road towards downtown Gray. SR 231 proceeds north thRough the town center and crosses the Royal River. The highway nicks the eastern corner of Gray and crosses into the town of New Gloucester, where it continues north through the town center and terminates at Lewiston Road, which carries US 202 / SR 4 / SR 100. North Yarmouth, officially the Town of North Yarmouth, is a town in Cumberland County, Maine. The population was 4,072 at the 2020 United States Census. It is part of the Portland– South Portland– Biddeford Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The area embracing North Yarmouth, first settled in 1636, was abandoned twice before successful final settlement in 1713. New Gloucester, Maine
New Gloucester is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, in the United States. It is home to the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, the last active Shaker village in the U.S. The town's population was 5,676 at the 2020 census. New Gloucester is part of Maine's Portland– South Portland–Biddeford, metropolitan statistical area. History New Gloucester was established in 1736 under a Massachusetts Bay Colony grant of a tract of land in the Maine Territory to sixty inhabitants of the Gloucester fishing village on Cape Ann. State Route 4 (SR 4) is a long state highway located in southern and western Maine. It is a major interregional route and the first such route to be designated in the state. State Route 100 (SR 100) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maine, running from Portland to Bangor. The south end of SR 100 is at the intersection of Forest Avenue and Cumberland Avenue in downtown Portland. Its north end is at the intersection of Hammond Street, Main Street, State Street and Central Street in downtown Bangor; SR 100 runs along Hammond Street with U.S. Route 2 (US 2) which continues across Main Street/Central Street onto State Street.
