Maine State Route 206
State Route 206 (SR 206) is a short state route in the U.S. state of Maine. It is located entirely in Washington and runs from SR 17 to SR 105. At in length, it is the shortest primary state highway in Maine. Route description SR 206 begins at the intersection of SR 17 and Valley Road on the western side of the Town of Washington. It runs north on West Washington Road through western Washington through a mostly wooded landscape but many homes that line the road have clearings for small farming activities. The state route ends at a T-intersection with SR 105 continuing north and east from this intersection. Washington, officially the Town of Washington, is a town in Knox County, Maine. The population was 1,590 at the 2020 United States Census. History Washington, Maine was first settled in 1797, by the Nelson family. At that time it was known as Putnam, named after General Israel Putnam, a war hero. It was officially renamed Washington in 1825. One early item of interest in Washington's history was the "paint mine". There was a large deposit of red and yellow ocher in a nearby cave, which may have been used by people who lived here three to five thousand years ago and who used large quantities of ocher, normally red, to cover both the bodies of the dead and the burial artifacts. Archaeologists refer to these people as "Red Paint People". The red panel at the hoist of the Official Town Flag refers to these people. Knox County is a county located in the state of Maine, in the United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 40,607. Its county seat is Rockland. The county is named for American Revolutionary War general and Secretary of War Henry Knox, who lived in the county from 1795 until his death in 1806. The county was established on April 1, 1860, and is the most recent county to be created in Maine. It was carved from parts of Waldo and Lincoln counties. State Route 17 (abbreviated SR 17) is part of Maine's system of numbered state highways, located in the south central part of the state. It is a major regional route running for from an intersection with State Route 4 in Oquossoc to an intersection with U.S. Route 1 and U.S. Route 1A in Rockland. SR 17 travels through parts of Franklin, Oxford, Androscoggin, Kennebec, Lincoln and Knox counties.
