Swanville is a town in Waldo County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,377 at the 2020 census. History The town of Swanville lies within the Muscongus Patent of 1630, which from 1720 was known as the Waldo Patent. It was incorporated on February 19, 1818 (or 1819), following a petition made in November 1816 by James Leach and 37 others. Before that time, it was known variously as "The Plantation of Swan", "Swan's Plantation", and "Swan's Tract". Late 19th century industries included farming, brick-making, soap-making, and quarrying. The Oak Hill Quarry opened in 1872, producing a dark blue-gray granite that was used for paving stones. State Route 3 (SR 3) is a state highway located in southern Maine. It is a major interregional highway, connecting the Interstate 95 corridor to the Atlantic coast. The western terminus is at SR 8, SR 11 and SR 27 in Augusta and the eastern terminus is at SR 102 and SR 198 in Mount Desert. Major cities and towns along the length of SR 3 include Augusta, Belfast, Ellsworth, and Bar Harbor. Route description SR 3 begins at Civic Center Drive ( SR 8/ SR 11/ SR 27) in the northwest corner of Augusta. SR 3 heads east using the Augusta Bypass, a controlled-access road completed in 2004 to alleviate congestion in the city center caused by traffic headed to and from I-95. State Route 139 (SR 139) is a state highway traveling from U.S. Route 2 (US 2) and US 201 in Norridgewock at its western terminus to US 1A in Winterport at its eastern terminus. Route description SR 139 begins at an intersection with U.S. Route 201A, U.S. Route 2, and SR 8 in Norridgewock. The intersection of SR 139 and U.S. Route 2 is notorious for being one of the most dangerous intersections in central Maine. SR 139 then heads south and joins SR 104 for a 2.78 mile concurrency, during which it intersects with SR 23, followed by an interchange with Interstate 95. The section of SR 139 between U.S. Route 2 in Norridgewock and Interstate 95 in Fairfield is often used as a bypass of U.S Route 2 through Skowhegan. From the interchange with Interstate 95, as it heads east there is a 0.22 concurrency with U.S. Route 201 in Fairfield and then a 2.23 mile concurrency with SR 11 and SR 100 in Benton.
