''Maid in England'' is the fourth and final studio album by the American drag queen Divine. It contains 12 songs. The album's first three singles, " Walk Like a Man", "Twistin' the Night Away" and " Hard Magic", all charted in the UK. Critical reception Reviewing the album's re-release for ''Louder Than War'', Phil Newall wrote that "all the expected Hi-NRG characteristics are present, frantic syncopated beats, massed male backing vocals insistent keyboard melodies", concluding that "what lifts Divine from the ranks of Hi-NRG masses are the growled vocals and the knowledge that Divine actually lived a counter culture life style as opposed to just singing about it." Divine (performer)
Harris Glenn Milstead (October 19, 1945 – March 7, 1988), better known by his stage name Divine, was an American actor, singer, and drag queen. Closely associated with independent filmmaker John Waters, Divine was a character actor, usually performing female roles in cinematic and theatrical productions, and adopted a female drag persona for his music career. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, to a conservative middle-class family, Milstead developed an early interest in drag while working as a women's hairdresser. By the mid-1960s he had embraced the city's counterculture of the 1960s, countercultural scene and befriended Waters, who gave him the name "Divine" and the tagline of "the most beautiful woman in the world, almost". "You Think You're a Man" is a single by American performance artist Divine, released in 1984. The song also appeared on the compilation album ''The Story So Far'', released the same year. It was written by Geoff Deane, formerly the lead singer and main songwriter with both the Leyton Buzzards and Modern Romance, and his sometime songwriting partner Keith Miller. Geoff Deane later went on to write the cross dressing-themed movie '' Kinky Boots''. The song was later covered by the Vaselines in 1987 and appeared on the EP ''Son of a Gun''. Bruce Martin Woolley (born 11 November 1953) is an English musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He wrote songs with artists such as The Buggles and Grace Jones, including "Video Killed the Radio Star" and " Slave to the Rhythm", and co-founded The Radio Science Orchestra. Matthew James Aitken (born 25 August 1956) is an English songwriter and record producer, brought up in Astley, Greater Manchester, best known as the creative force behind the 1980s and early 1990s songwriting/production trio Stock Aitken Waterman. Hi-NRG (pronounced "high energy") is a genre of uptempo disco or electronic dance music (EDM) that originated in the United States during the late 1970s and early 1980s. As a music genre, typified by fast tempo, staccato hi-hat rhythms (and the four-on-the-floor pattern), reverberated "intense" vocals and "pulsating" octave basslines, it was particularly influential on the disco scene.
