Mahned, Mississippi
Mahned, also known as Mixons Mill, is an unincorporated community located in Perry County, Mississippi. History The community was founded by a Confederate officer, Captain Joe Denham, who had returned to his home in Perry County after the Siege of Vicksburg. He designated the settlement 'Mahned', which is the reverse spelling of his last name. Although the captain wanted to use Denham, a community in nearby Wayne County was already identified by that name. Mahned is located on the former Illinois Central Railroad. It was formerly home to a school, several stores, two churches, and a sawmill. At one point, the Fain-Fagin Lumber Company ran the sawmill in Mahned. The Mahned Lumber Company operated facilities in Mahned. A post office operated under the name Mahned from 1903 to 1923. Mahned Bridge
The Mahned Bridge was constructed in 1903 and spans the Leaf River in Perry County, Mississippi. Around 1980, the bridge was removed from service and access was terminated. History The Mahned Bridge was constructed by the Chicago Bridge & Iron Company as a prefabricated, one lane, iron truss structure. Illinois Central Railroad
The Illinois Central Railroad , sometimes called the Main Line of Mid-America, was a railroad in the Central United States, with its primary routes connecting Chicago, Illinois, with New Orleans, Louisiana, and Mobile, Alabama. The siege of Vicksburg (May 18 – July 4, 1863) was the final major military action in the Vicksburg campaign of the American Civil War. In a series of maneuvers, Union Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and his Army of the Tennessee crossed the Mississippi River and drove the Confederate Army of Mississippi, led by Lt. Gen. John C. Area codes 601 and 769 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for central and southern Mississippi, excluding the three counties of the Gulf Coast.
