Chief Mahaska
Mahaska (archaic Ioway ''Maxúshga'' pronounced ; contemporary ''Maxúhga''), or White Cloud, (1784–1834) was a chief of the Native American Iowa tribe. His son, also named Mahaska, was better known as Francis White Cloud. Early life and education Mahaska was born into the Iowa tribe. He became chief at an early age after killing several enemy Sioux to avenge his father's death by them. Later Mahaska supposedly killed a French trader in an argument; he was arrested and imprisoned in St. Louis, Missouri. After he escaped, he led a raid against the Osage. Afterward, he decided that his father's death was finally avenged. Mahaska lay down his arms and adopted the lifestyle of the European-American settlers, building a log home and farming. He refused to let his braves avenge the death of an Iowa chief named Crane at the hands of Omaha Indians in 1833. When several Iowa killed six Omaha warriors, Mahaska assisted in their arrest. Mahaska, Kansas
Mahaska is a city in Washington County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 46. It is located 1 mile south of the Nebraska state line. History Mahaska was founded in 1887 by L. Bonham. It was likely named for Chief Mahaska. The first post office in Mahaska was established in December 1887. In 1854, the Sixth Principal Meridian or 40th Parallel, approximately 1 mile northwest of the present day Mahaska. Originally marked in 1856, this site was the beginning point for land surveys for all land in Kansas, Nebraska, three-fourths of Colorado, most of Wyoming, and part of South Dakota. The original marker was rediscovered in 1976, then a new monument was dedicated in 1987. Geography Mahaska is located at (39.987024, -97.352376).
