Magnet, Texas
Magnet is an unincorporated community in southeastern Wharton County, Texas, United States. The rural community is situated at the intersection of State Highway 60 (SH 60) and County Road 102, a short distance north of the Matagorda County line. Magnet is identified by road signs on SH 60 and by a tall broadcasting tower. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 42 in 2000. it is located within the Greater Houston metropolitan area. History ''Circa'' 1907, the Taylor-Fowler Land Company of Oklahoma laid out a town on the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway. In 1911, Frank D. and Fred Fowler began selling 12,000 acres, promoting the area's rich soil. The same year, a post office was opened. Newgulf (or New Gulf) is an unincorporated community in Wharton County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of ten in 2009. It is located within the Greater Houston metropolitan area. History Newgulf was founded as a company town for the Texas Gulf Sulfur Company in 1928 and is reportedly the largest sulfur deposit in the world. Seth Ingram developed a land grant for the community. While it was being built, employees of the sulfur company held a contest to name the community, with Marie Ertz, who worked at the Houston office, as the winner. There were 400 dwellings, with an average of three bedrooms, built in the community as homes for the employees and their families. Boling-Iago is located along Farm to Market Road 1301 about southeast of Wharton, the county seat. Boling is located at the intersection of FM 1301 and Farm to Market Road 442, while the community of Iago is to the northeast at the intersection of FM 1301 and Farm to Market Road 1096. The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway was a subsidiary of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway. From its starting point in Galveston, Texas, the railroad eventually extended northwestwards across the state to Sweetwater and northwards via Fort Worth to Purcell, Oklahoma. History 19th century In 1873, competition between the cities of Houston and Galveston was strong, and the Galveston, Houston & Henderson Railroad (GH&H) was the only rail link between the two cities. The competition between Houston and Galveston was fed by the quarantines, which were often imposed on Galveston traffic by Houston. These quarantines occurred almost annually and were based on yellow fever outbreaks and epidemics.
