Magical Girl Pretty Sammy
is a Japanese original video animation (OVA) series produced by AIC and Pioneer LDC, and released from 1995 to 1997 as three videos. It features character Sasami from the ''Tenchi Muyo!'' series as a magical girl, and is noted for recasting the ''Tenchi Muyo!'' characters in new roles. It has been dubbed into English by Pioneer USA. It also spawned two television series - ''Magical Project S'', and '' Sasami: Magical Girls Club''. Background ''Magical Girl Pretty Sammy'' originated not in animation but in voice drama, beginning in 1993 with the release of ''Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki CD Special 1 (Creation of the Universe Journey Across Space-Time)''. Here, Washu's newest invention, the Dimensional Controller, is glitched by the girls, creating several parallel ''Tenchi!'' worlds. Magical Girl
is a subgenre of Japanese fantasy media (including anime, manga, light novels, and live-action media) centered around young girls who possess magical abilities, which they typically use through an ideal alter ego into which they can transform. The genre emerged in 1962 with ''Himitsu no Akko-chan'', followed by ''Sally the Witch'' in 1966 produced by Toei Animation. A wave of similar anime produced by the studio in the 1970s led to being used as a common term for the genre. In the 1980s, the term was largely replaced by "magical girl", reflecting the new popularity of shows produced by other studios, including ''Magical Princess Minky Momo'' and ''Creamy Mami, the Magic Angel''. The following is a list of the major characters from the anime and manga series ''Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki'' and its spin-offs ''Tenchi Muyo! GXP'', ''Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar'', ''Tenchi Universe'', ''Tenchi in Tokyo'', and ''Ai Tenchi Muyo!''. Concept Masaki Kajishima and Hiroki Hayashi, who both worked on the ''Bubblegum Crisis'' OVAs, cite the show as being the inspiration for ''Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki''. In an interview with AIC, Hayashi described ''Bubblegum Crisis'' as "A pretty gloomy anime. Serious fighting, complicated human relationships, and dark Mega Tokyo." Hayashi and Kajishima thought it would be fun to create some comedic episodes with ideas like the girls going to hot springs, but these ideas were rejected by their sponsors.
