Madrigal (band)
Madrigal was a Canadian band who had a 1970 hit in two different charts with "I Believe in Sunshine". Their album also made the charts the following year. Background Formed in 1968, the Ontario group was made up of John Swainson on guitar, bass & vocals, Rick Henderson on guitar & vocals, Peter Boynton on piano, organ, bass, keyboards & vocals, and Don Simpson on drums. The group was pictured on the front cover of the ''RPM Weekly'' October 17, 1970 issue. They had success with the single "I believe in Sunshine" which was produced by Greg Hambleton. This group has no connection to the Los Angeles group Madrigal who released the single, "Need I Say" bw "Feelings Before" on Zipperman's Public! record label in 1970. Shelby Sumpter Singleton, Jr. (December 16, 1931 – October 7, 2009) was an American record producer and record label owner. Early life He was born Shelby Sumpter Singleton, Jr. in Waskom, Texas. His parents were Shelby Sumpter Singleton, Sr. and Alvina Marcantel. As a youngster, living in Shreveport, Louisiana, Singleton was known as "Sonny Boy". He graduated from high school at age 15, then attended the Louisiana Business School. After graduating, he joined the Marine Corps and served in the Korean War. He would spend the rest of his life with a metal plate in his head due to an injury suffered while serving there. Career After his military discharge he worked in a munitions company, based in Shreveport, Louisiana for five years before being hired to promote Starday Records country music catalog. Axe Records is a Canadian record label founded by Greg Hambleton in 1972. After a number of years of inactivity, the label was revived in 2013. Mudflat (band)
Aaron Space was a Canadian rock group that had a national hit with " Keep on Movin" in 1971. They had evolved out of a band called Mudflat. Background The history of the group can be traced to two members of the group, Lighthouse who left the group. By 1970, Pinky Dauvin and Grant Fullerton had formed Mudflat. With two members leaving and a new one coming on board, the group eventually became Aaron Space. Aaron Space were handled by Capricorn Music Association, a Canadian booking agency from Toronto. They were allegedly seen in action by John Pozer who signed them to Warner Bros. A progressive rock type of group, they had a hit with their debut single. Aaron space was made up of guitarist David Moulaison, Jake Thomas on guitar, Gene Falbo on bass and Bob DiSalle on drums. Guitarist Jake Thomas had previously been in the group Buckstone Hardware. Poor Souls (band)
Poor Souls was a Scottish band who had a hit in the UK, broke up and then re-emerged as a Canadian band who recorded for the Quality Records label, and two hits in 1970 with "Lookin’ Round", and "Comin' Round". They also had another with "Land of the Few". Background The group's history goes back to Dundee, Scotland when a group called The Johnny Hudson Hi-Four aka The Hi-Four was formed. When another musician, Chick Taylor came on board, the name was changed to The Poor Soul. The UK line up consisted of John Moran (aka Johnny Hudson) on guitar & vocals, Doug Martin on bass & vocals, Chick Taylor on guitar & keyboards and John Casey on drums & vocals. After sigining with Decca in 1965, they recorded the single, "When My Baby Cries" which was released in June that year on Decca F 12183. Steel River was a Canadian rock group formed in Toronto, which performed primarily during the 1970s. Background Starting in 1965 as a part-time Toronto R&B club band called The Toronto Shotgun, Steel River became a full-time band in 1969. The lineup consisted of singer John Dudgeon, keyboardist Bob Forrester, bassist Rob Cockell, guitarist Tony Dunning, and drummers Ray Angrove and Dennis Watson. Greg Hambleton signed them to his then-label Tuesday Records, which released their first single "Ten Pound Note", and was written with the assistance of A Passing Fancy's Jay Telfer. An axe ( sometimes ax in American English; see spelling differences) is an implement that has been used for millennia to shape, split and cut wood, to harvest timber, as a weapon, and as a ceremonial or heraldic symbol.
