Madrid is the primary hamlet and a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Madrid in St. Lawrence County, New York, United States. At the 2020 census, it had a population of 736, out of 1,735 in the entire town of Madrid. The community is in northern St. Lawrence County, south of the center of the town of Madrid. New York State Route 310 runs through Madrid, leading northeast to Massena and southwest to Canton. State Route 345 crosses NY 310 south of the center of the hamlet. Grasse River
The Grasse River or Grass River (per 1905 decision of the U.S. Board on Geographic Names) is a river in northern New York, in the United States. The river mainly flows northeast from the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains into the St. Lawrence Valley, making up what is known as the greater St. Lawrence River Drainage Basin along with other tributaries such as the Oswegatchie and Raquette rivers. The river was named after François Joseph Paul, comte de Grasse, a French admiral and hero of the American Revolutionary War. Potsdam is a village located in the Town of Potsdam in St. Lawrence County, New York, United States. The population was 8,312 at the 2020 census. The Village of Potsdam is in the eastern part of the town and is northeast of Canton, the county seat. The village is the locale of the State University of New York at Potsdam and Clarkson University. History The village was formerly a community of the St. Regis Indians. Waddington is a Village (New York), village located in the Waddington (town), New York, Town of Waddington in St. Lawrence County, New York, United States. The population was 972 at the 2010 census. The village is named after James Waddington. The Village of Waddington is at the northern edge of the town and is north of Canton (village), New York, Canton. History The first settlers arrived around 1798. The village was originally called "Hamilton" (after Alexander Hamilton), but was changed to Waddington in 1818. Joshua Waddington was a friend of Hamilton and one of the original landowners. The village was incorporated in 1839. When the Town of Waddington was formed afterwards, it adopted the name of the village. During the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway part of the village needed to be relocated and some of the old industrial area was destroyed. New York State Route 345
New York State Route 345 (NY 345) is a state highway located entirely within St. Lawrence County in the North Country of New York in the United States. It is a north–south route connecting the towns of Waddington and Potsdam by way of the town of Madrid. The southern terminus of NY 345 is at an intersection with U.S. Route 11 (US 11) in the village of Potsdam. Its northern terminus is at a junction with NY 37 in the village of Waddington by the St. Lawrence River. NY 345 was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York; however, it originally followed a different alignment south of the hamlet of Madrid. Canton is a village and county seat of St. Lawrence County, New York, United States. The village is centrally located in both the town of Canton and the county of St. Lawrence. The population was 7,155 at the 2020 census. The name comes from the Chinese city of Canton (now Guangzhou). New York State Route 310 (NY 310) is a north–south state highway located entirely within St. Lawrence County in the North Country of the U.S. state of New York. The southern terminus is at U.S. Route 11 (US 11) and NY 68 in the town of Canton, just east of the village of Canton. The northern terminus is at NY 56 in the community of Raymondville in the town of Norfolk. Route description NY 310 begins at an intersection with US 11 and NY 68 in the town of Canton. The United States census of 2020 was the twenty-fourth decennial United States census. Census Day, the reference day used for the census, was April 1, 2020.
