Madatapa Lake
__NOTOC__ Madatapa Lake ( ka, მადათაფა) is a lake in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of southeastern Georgia, near the border with Armenia, north of Bavra. Covering an area of at an elevation of , the lake is noted for its Paravan race of common carp and has been considered as a commercial fishing production site. It is found in one of the most earthquake-prone areas of the Caucasus. A shallow lake, it, along with Khanchali Lake, is one of the most important in the country for breeding and staging waterbirds, including the endangered Dalmatian pelican. Since 2020 it has been designated as a protected Ramsar site. The villages of Zhdanovakani, Epremovka, Troitskoye and Sameba lie around the lake. Biketi Lake lies to the north. Javakheti Plateau
Javalkheti Plateau ( ka, ჯავახეთის პლატო) is a volcanic plateau within the Caucasus Mountains that covers the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of Georgia, along the border with Turkey and Armenia. Its elevation is over 2,000 m. Geography The plateau is a large grassland plain (alpine steppe) with many wetlands and alpine lakes (six of the largest lakes of Georgia, Tabatskuri, Paravani, Khanchali, Madatapa, Kartsakhi, Saghamo). The Javalkheti Wetlands are included in the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance. The plain is crossed from north to south by the Abuli-Samsari Mountain Range, a series of volcanic cones. The western side of the plateau is surrounded by the Javakheti Range. Madatapa Managed Reserve
Madatapa Managed Reserve ( ka, მადათაფის ტბის აღკვეთილი) is a protected area in Ninotsminda Municipality in Samtskhe-Javakheti region of Georgia. It protects Madatapa Lake situated in the south-eastern part of the volcanic Javakheti Plateau, at an altitude of 2108 m above sea level. Madatapa Managed Reserve is part of ''Javakheti Protected Areas'' which also includes Javakheti National Park, Kartsakhi Managed Reserve, Sulda Managed Reserve, Khanchali Managed Reserve, Bugdasheni Managed Reserve. Fauna Madatapa Lake is one of the most important in Georgia for breeding and staging waterbirds such as the endangered Dalmatian pelican. Dalmatian Pelican
The Dalmatian pelican (''Pelecanus crispus'') is the largest member of the pelican family, and perhaps the world's largest freshwater bird, although rivaled in weight and length by the largest swans. They are elegant soaring birds, with wingspans rivaling those of the great albatrosses, and their flocks fly in graceful synchrony. With a range spanning across much of Central Eurasia, from the Mediterranean in the West to the Taiwan Strait in the East, and from the Persian Gulf in the South to Siberia in the North, it is a short-to-medium-distance migrant between breeding and overwintering areas. No subspecies are known to exist over its wide range, but based on size differences, a Pleistocene paleosubspecies, ''P. c. palaeocrispus,'' has been described from fossils recovered at Binagady, Azerbaijan.
