Macra Na Feirme
Macra na Feirme (; officially meaning "Stalwarts of the land") is an Irish voluntary rural youth organisation. The organisation provides a social outlet for members in sport, travel, public speaking, performing arts, community involvement and agriculture. History It was founded in 1944 by Stephen Cullinan, a rural science teacher. The organisation's original purpose was to provide young farmers with adequate training to ensure their livelihood and to provide an outlet for socialising in rural areas. Farming
Agriculture or farming is the practice of cultivating plants and livestock. Agriculture was the key development in the rise of sedentary human civilization, whereby farming of domesticated species created food surpluses that enabled people to live in cities. The history of agriculture began thousands of years ago. After gathering wild grains beginning at least 105,000 years ago, nascent farmers began to plant them around 11,500 years ago. Sheep, goats, pigs and cattle were domesticated over 10,000 years ago. Plants were independently cultivated in at least 11 regions of the world. Irish Farmers Journal
The ''Irish Farmers Journal'' is a weekly newspaper (published Thursdays) which provides farming news, specialist advice, market data and country living features to the Irish agricultural industry. As of October 2019, it reportedly had a weekly readership of 263,000. It is the largest selling agricultural publication in both Ireland and the UK, and it had a weekly circulation sale of 62,226 copies at the end of 2018. It is owned by The Agricultural Trust, which also owns ''The Irish Field''. The Irish Farmers Journal is the only agricultural publication which operates as a legal Trust. Its ownership structure provides it with the ability to make significant investments in editorial content. Foróige
Foróige is an Irish organisation whose purpose is "to enable young people to involve themselves consciously and actively in their development and in the development of society". Macra na Tuaithe, the youth branch of Macra na Feirme, was formed on . In 1981, the organisation changed its name to ''Foróige'', derived from ''forbairt na hóige'', which means "development of youth". History The first club The first club was formed in the town of Mooncoin, Co. Kilkenny on where the local school held a youth club for the schoolchildren. As this was a success, another 12 pilot clubs came together and in 1953, Macra na Tuaithe was created. Funding and grants In 1958, the W.K. Blue Jean Country Queen Festival
The Blue Jean County Queen is a festival run by Meath Macra na Feirme that has taken place over the June Bank Holiday weekend in Athboy, Co. Meath since 1987. History In 1987, Patrick Farrelly a member of Macra na Feirme from Carnaross was inspired the song "Blue Jean Country Queen" by Linda Hargrove to create the festival. Since its inception, it has been run by Meath Macra na Feirme taken place in the town of Athboy, Co. Meath. Although in 2001 the festival was postponed due to the outbreak of foot and mouth disease. The closure of The Old Darnley Lodge Hotel in 2013, which was the venue for much of the weekends activity, resulted in the festival organizers having to put together alternative arrangements for housing many of the events. Queen Of The Land Festival
The Queen of the Land Festival is an annual festival in County Offaly, Ireland, hosted by Offaly Macra na Feirme in which young women compete for the title "Queen of the Land" based on their "appearance, personality, energy, confidence, dress sense, rural knowledge and elocution". The festival, which is currently sponsored by WR Shaw, was initiated by the ''Irish Farmers Journal'' in 1964 as part of the Kilkenny beer festival. The competition was then taken over by Offaly Macra three years later. County Meath lives up to the claim of being the "Royal County" by having had six Queens crowned over the years. Laois and Kilkenny come second with four titles each. The only year the contest had to be postponed was 2001; this was owing to the foot-and-mouth disease crisis that hit Ireland that year.
