Mackay Regional Council
The Mackay Region is a local government area located in North Queensland, Queensland, Australia. Established in 2008, it was preceded by three previous local government areas with modern histories extending back as far as 1869. It has an estimated operating budget of A$118 million. History ''Yuwibara (''also known as ''Yuibera, Yuri, Juipera, Yuwiburra)'' is an Australian Aboriginal language spoken on Yuwibara country. It is closely related to the Biri languages/dialects. The Yuwibara language region includes the landscape within the local government boundaries of the Mackay Region.' Prior to 2008, the Mackay Region was an entire area of three previous and distinct local government areas: * the City of Mackay; * the Shire of Mirani; * and the Shire of Sarina. The city had its beginning in the Mackay Municipality which was proclaimed on 22 September 1869 under the ''Municipal Institutions Act 1864''. Biri Language
Biri, also known as Biria, Birri Gubba, Birigaba, Wiri, Perembba and other variants, is an Australian Aboriginal language of the Mackay area of Queensland spoken by the Birri Gubba people. There are at least eight languages regarded as dialects of Biri, and two which are related but whose status is not yet fully determined (see the table to the right). All are covered in this article. A grammar of Biri proper was written before the language became nearly extinct. some of the dialects have been undergoing a revival for some years. Andergrove is a northern urban locality in Mackay in the Mackay Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Andergrove had a population of 9,419 people. Geography Andergrove has been steadily growing as a suburban community since 1990s and the housing stock is mostly low-set brick homes. History Andergrove State School opened on 21 February 1939. Pioneer State High School opened on 28 January 1986. At that time, Andergrove was in the Pioneer Shire, which was amalgamated into City of Mackay in 1994. South Mackay is a coastal suburb of Mackay in the Mackay Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , South Mackay had a population of 6,706 people. Geography As its name suggests, the suburb of South Mackay is immediately to the south of the central suburb of Mackay. Adjoining the Coral Sea, South Mackay has flat land just above sea level apart from a small hill (approx 10 metres above sea level) in the south-east of the locality. North Mackay is a suburb of Mackay in the Mackay Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , North Mackay had a population of 5,933 people. West Mackay is a suburb of Mackay in the Mackay Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , West Mackay had a population of 6,210 people. According to the , West Mackay includes the largest Maltese Australian community of any suburb in Queensland, numbering 243 individuals and making up 3.9% of the suburb's population. East Mackay is a coastal suburb of Mackay in the Mackay Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , East Mackay had a population of 3,564 people.
