Machaven, also known as Hines House, is a historic home located at Rocky Mount, Nash County, North Carolina. It was built in 1907–1908, and is a -story, Classical Revival style brick dwelling with slate covered hipped roof. It has five interior chimneys, a pedimented portico with Doric order columns, and a full width one-story porch. The interior finish is of the Colonial Revival style. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The Colonial Revival architectural style seeks to revive elements of American colonial architecture. The beginnings of the Colonial Revival style are often attributed to the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, which reawakened Americans to the architectural traditions of their colonial past. Fairly small numbers of Colonial Revival homes were built c. 1880–1910, a period when Queen Anne-style architecture was dominant in the United States. Doric Order
The Doric order was one of the three orders of ancient Greek and later Roman architecture; the other two canonical orders were the Ionic and the Corinthian. The Doric is most easily recognized by the simple circular capitals at the top of columns. Originating in the western Doric region of Greece, it is the earliest and, in its essence, the simplest of the orders, though still with complex details in the entablature above.
