Mace Francis
Mace Francis (born 1978) is an Australian composer and academic. Career Francis moved to Perth, Western Australia from Victoria in 2000 to study jazz composition and arranging. He graduated from WA Academy of Performing Arts in 2004 and completed a PhD at Edith Cowan University in 2015. In 2003 he was nominated for the Australian Jazz Bell Awards' Best Australian Jazz Song of the Year for ''Land Speed Record'' off his album of the same name The album was recorded with a nonet in New York and included American saxophonist Jon Gordon. It was released on Listen/Hear Collective, a record label run by Francis and Johannes Luebbers in Perth. In 2005 Francis formed the Mace Francis Orchestra and they released seven albums over the next 15 years. The Perth International Jazz Festival (PIJF) is an annual jazz festival event held over three days in early November. This jazz festival incorporates both ticketed and free community events. Its location over the festival weekend spans across the CBD of Perth, the cultural precinct area of Northbridge, through to Hyde Park in the City of Vincent. History The Perth International Jazz Festival was founded by associate professor and jazz pianist Graham Wood. Wood served as Festival Director until his death in 2017 and was replaced by Mace Francis. Cat Hope
Catherine Anne "Cat" Hope (born 11 March 1966), is an Australian composer, musician and academic. She started her music and academic careers in Perth and relocated to Melbourne in 2017. Her opera, ''Speechless'', was first performed in 2019 at the Perth Festival. At the Art Music Awards of 2020 she won Work of the Year: Dramatic for ''Speechless''. Steve Dow of ''The Age'' described the opera, "fuelled by outrage over the imprisonment of asylum seeker children, which features growling and screaming to an unconventional score without musical notation." Hope has also won the Art Music Award for Excellence in Experimental Music in 2011 for Decibel's 2009–2010 Annual Programs and in 2014 for her ''Drawn from Sound'' exhibition. WAM Song Of The Year
WAM was originally formed as the Western Australian Rock Music Industry Association Inc. (WARMIA) in 1985, with its main aim to develop and run annual awards recognising achievements within the music industry in Western Australia. WAM first received project funding from the state government in 1989, and in the early 90s the word "rock" was dropped from the title to give the organisation scope to take on a broader constituency. In 1989 the inaugural WA Song Contest commenced, in 2002 it was rebranded as the WAM Song of the Year. The WAM Song of the Year is open to all residents of Western Australia. Graham Wood (musician)
Graham Wood (15 September 1971 – 19 July 2017) was an Australian jazz pianist and educator. Career Wood taught jazz piano at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in Perth, Western Australia, in 2001, became head of the jazz department in 2005, and Program Director of Music in 2006. In 2009, he opened The Ellington Jazz Club in Perth, Western Australia. In its first year, the venue put on 520 shows and featured 2,586 musicians. Wood was a PhD candidate at the University of Western Australia School of Music and completed his thesis in 2010 entitled "Factors affecting the performance wellness of jazz pianists in practice and performance". He presented two papers at the Performing Arts Medicine Association annual conference in Aspen, Colorado. He received a 2002 commission from the Fremantle International Jazz Festival to compose a one-hour work entitled "Joan". West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra
The West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) is an Australian youth jazz orchestra based in Perth, Western Australia. WAYJO has 54 jazz musicians between 14 and 25 years of age and currently presents over 55 performances a year across Australia. History The West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra was founded in 1983. The original band was formed from secondary school students from the music specialist schools, young local musicians and some of the original students of the inaugural Jazz Studies course at the WA Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). By the early 1990s WAYJO had grown to two bands and by the late 1990s three bands were in operation each with its own Music Director, which remains the position today.
