Maccabi Or Akiva ( he, מכבי אור עקיבא) was an Israeli football club based in Or Akiva. History The club was founded in 1966 and played in the lower leagues in its early years, finally advancing to Liga Bet for 1978–79. After two seasons in Liga Bet, the club won its division and was promoted to third tier Liga Alef. However, the club stayed only one season in third tier and dropped back to Liga Bet at the end of the season. The club was promoted, once again, to Liga Alef in 1984. In 1996, the club relegated to Liga Bet and a second relegation followed in 1998, meaning the club now played in bottom tier Liga Gimel, which lasted until winning its Liga Gimel division, gaining promotion to Liga Bet. For the following 8, the club played mostly in Liga Bet except for one season in which it played in Liga Gimel. Or Akiva ( he, אוֹר עֲקִיבָא) (''light of Akiva''–in memory of Rabbi Akiva who was tortured and killed at this locale) is a city located in the Haifa District of Israel, on the country's Israeli coastal plain, coastal plain. The 2008–09 Liga Gimel season saw 83 clubs competing in 6 regional divisions for promotion to Liga Bet. This was the last season that Liga Gimel was the sixth tier in the Israeli football league system, a position it held since 1998–99. At the end of the season, due to the league system restructuring, two clubs from each division were promoted to Liga Bet. Upper Galilee Division Hapoel Jatt Yanuh HaGlilit, Hapoel Hatzor and Maccabi Kafr Yasif all registered to play in the division, but withdrew before playing a single match. The 2010–11 Liga Gimel season saw 92 clubs competing in 6 regional divisions for promotion to Liga Bet. F.C. Bu'eine (Upper Galilee), F.C. Daburiyya (Jezreel), Hapoel Baqa al-Gharbiyye (Samaria), F.C. Tira (Sharon), Gadna Tel Aviv (Tel Aviv) and Maccabi Be'er Ya'akov (Central) all won their respective divisions and were promoted to Liga Bet. During the summer, as several vacancies were created in Liga Bet, runners-up F.C. Hapoel ( he, הפועל, lit. ''the worker'') is an Israeli Jewish sports association established in 1926 by the Histadrut Labor Federation. History During the British Mandate of Palestine period Hapoel had a bitter rivalry with Maccabi and organized its own competitions, with the exception of football, the only sport in which all the organizations played each other. At the time, Hapoel took no part in the ''Eretz Israel Olympic Committee'', which was controlled by Maccabi, and instead sought for international ties with similar workers sports organizations of socialist parties. Therefore, Hapoel became a member of SASI in 1927 and later was a member of CSIT. Liga Gimel
Liga Gimel ( he, ליגה ג', lit. ''League C'') is the fifth and bottom division of Israeli Football League, a position it has held since 2009. From Liga Alef and downwards to this, each league is separated by region as well. History Liga Gimel was first established in 1951 as a third division, below Liga Alef and Liga Bet. In 1955, after designating the first tier as Liga Leumit, Liga Gimel was demoted to the fourth tier. Further demotions followed in 1976, after the second tier Liga Artzit to the fifth tier and in 1999, after the establishment of Liga Ha'Al to the sixth tier. At the end of the 2008–09 season, Liga Artzit was scrapped and Liga Gimel was brought up back to the fifth tier.
