MacDonald Broadcasting is a privately held radio broadcasting company in Michigan owned by Kenneth MacDonald, Jr. The family-owned broadcasting group is headquartered in Saginaw and owns eight radio stations across Mid-Michigan, including stations in the Tri-Cities and Lansing markets. Under the name MacDonald Audio Communications, Kenneth MacDonald also owns a MUZAK service delivering commercial-free music to retail stores across the region. The company previously owned stations in the Petoskey and Cadillac radio markets; however, those stations were spun off to MacDonald-Garber Broadcasting. Prior to the split of the company, MacDonald Broadcasting was the largest privately held and family-owned broadcaster in the state. WKCQ
WKCQ (98.1 FM) is a radio station licensed to Saginaw, Michigan, and broadcasting on 98.1 mHz with an effective radiated power of 50,000 watts. The station has broadcast a popular country music format since 1968 (the country format began under the station's original calls of WSAM-FM). Every year since 1992, the station hosts a free concert on Ojibway Island in downtown Saginaw. Under the right conditions it can be heard all the way in Port Sanilac. For a period of time, WKCQ's listenership in the Flint area declined when WFBE, with which it competes with in Genesee County, Michigan, switched to country, however listenership has rebounded in the Flint area due to the stability of its on-air talent, with Jim Kramer, Kevin Profitt, Greg Cole and Brian Bailey, among others, having been with the station for a decade or more. WKHQ
WKHQ-FM (105.9 MHz) is a 100,000-watt radio station licensed to Charlevoix, Michigan, with studios located on U.S. 131 South Petoskey, Michigan and US 31 Acme, Michigan. The Top 40 (CHR) station is known to listeners as '' Hits 106 KHQ, Northern Michigan's #1 Hit Music Channel''. WVOY The station signed on in 1980, but its roots can be traced back to the early 1970s, with the beginning of WVOY, a 5,000-watt daytime-only station at 1270 kHz on the AM dial. WVOY was one of the first all-contemporary-hit-music radio stations in northern Michigan and featured Bill Vogel ("The Captain," formerly of Detroit's WDRQ), John Yaroch, Rick Durkin, and other major-market-quality talent. Charlevoix, Michigan
Charlevoix ( ) is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is the county seat of Charlevoix County. The population was 2,348 at the 2020 census. WLXV (96.7 FM) is a radio station licensed to Cadillac, Michigan. The station, which began broadcasting on July 7, 1974, has previously programmed easy listening and adult contemporary music as WITW, beautiful music as WEVZ, and CHR as WWLZ ("Lakes FM"). WWLZ was changed in 1994 to a simulcast of WLXT 96.3 FM in Petoskey, which continued until MacDonald-Garber Broadcasting, believing the Cadillac area needed its own music station (as opposed to simulcasts of stations from Traverse City or elsewhere), began the "Mix" format. WLXT (96.3 FM, "Lite 96.3") is an adult contemporary radio station licensed to Petoskey, Michigan, at an ERP of 100,000 watts, covering most of northern Michigan. It is owned by Trish MacDonald-Garber, whose family has owned the station for over 30 years. WMBN-FM The station signed on in 1967 at 96.7, only broadcasting with 3,000 watts and airing beautiful music. WTCM (580 kHz) is an AM radio station broadcasting in Traverse City, Michigan. It is owned by the Biederman family and their company, Midwestern Broadcasting. Today, WTCM, along with sister WTCM-FM is at or near the top of the Arbitron ratings, and are part of a dying breed of family-owned-and-operated radio stations. WMBN (1340 AM) is a radio station in Petoskey, Michigan, United States. The station, owned by MacDonald-Garber Broadcasting, airs Fox Sports Radio format of sports. WMBN went on the air in April 1947 and is the oldest continuously operating radio station still on the air in Petoskey, though its claim of being "Petoskey's first radio station" is technically incorrect since it was preceded on the air by the short-lived WBBP in the 1920s. The station was founded by Les Biederman and, along with WTCM and WTCM-FM in Traverse City, WATZ in Alpena, and the now-defunct WATC in Gaylord, was affiliated with his "Paul Bunyan Network."
