The Mabley Developmental Center is a state institution for the developmentally disabled located in Dixon, Illinois. It is named for Jack Mabley Jack Arnold Mabley (October 26, 1915 – January 6, 2006) was an American newspaper reporter and columnist. Early life and career Mabley was born on October 26, 1915, in Binghamton, New York, to Clarence Ware Mabley (born Clarence Ware Mable) ..., a Chicago columnist, in recognition of his unstinting support for the project. In 1899, the Illinois General Assembly authorized the creation of the Illinois State Colony for Epileptics under the Board of State Commissioners of Public Charities. However, no funds for construction and operation were appropriated until 1913. In 1909, the Board of Administration replaced the Board of State Commissioners of Public Charities. Moms Mabley
Loretta Mary Aiken (March 19, 1894 – May 23, 1975), known by her stage name Jackie "Moms" Mabley, was an American stand-up comedian and actress. Mabley began her career on the theater stage in the 1920s and became a veteran entertainer of the Chitlin' Circuit of African-American vaudeville. Mabley later recorded comedy albums and appeared in films and on television programs including ''The Ed Sullivan Show'' and ''The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour''. Early life Loretta Mary Aiken was born in Brevard, North Carolina, US, on March 19, 1894. She was one of 16 children born to James Aiken and Mary Smith, who had married in 1891. Her father owned and operated several successful businesses, while her mother kept house and took in boarders. Her teenage years were tumultuous. Aiken had given birth to two children that had resulted from her being raped at age 11, by an elderly black man, and at age 13, by a white sheriff. Both children were given up for adoption. Jack Mabley
Jack Arnold Mabley (October 26, 1915 – January 6, 2006) was an American newspaper reporter and columnist. Early life and career Mabley was born on October 26, 1915, in Binghamton, New York, to Clarence Ware Mabley (born Clarence Ware Mable) and Mabelle née Howe, a concert pianist. After studying journalism at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he was the editor of the Daily Illini his senior year, and graduating in 1938, Mabley worked for the City News Bureau, the Associated Press, and then as a reporter for the Chicago Daily News'' before serving four years as a U.S. Navy lieutenant during the war. He returned to the Daily News in 1948 as a columnist. He joined the ''Chicago American'' in 1961, and remained there as a columnist and associate editor until, now a tabloid known as '' Chicago Today'', it folded in 1974. Mabley And Carew
Mabley & Carew was a prominent department store in Cincinnati, Ohio. History The store traced its roots to 1877, when Detroit merchants C. R. Mabley and Joseph T. Carew, en route to Memphis, were stranded in Cincinnati by a late train and wound up going into business in the heart of what was then a booming river city. Having missed their connection, they walked around town and reached Fountain Square, saw a "For Rent" sign, and decided that was a fine place for a store. Mabley & Carew was the first store in Cincinnati to adopt full-page newspaper ads, to give elaborate Christmas performances, and to set up the Arbor Day custom. The Mabley & Carew building was once illuminated by 10,000 lights that glimmered opposite Fountain Square. The company was owned by a joint partnership of Messrs Mabley and Carew but managed by Carew. After Mabley's death in 1885, Carew became sole owner of the business.
