Mabel Mary Spanton (1 December 1874 — ca. 1940) was a British landscape painter who primarily worked in watercolour.''Who's Who in Art'' (Third Edition, 1934) Life and work Mabel Mary Spanton was born in Hanley, Staffordshire on 1 December 1874, the daughter of Dr. William Dunnet Spanton, F.R.C.S. She studied art at Hanley School of Art under J. S. Cartlidge, and also in Newlyn, Cornwall under Stanhope Forbes, R.A. Spanton was elected as a member of the prestigious Royal Watercolour Society in 1927. The Royal Watercolour Society is a British institution of painters working in watercolours. The Society is a centre of excellence for water-based media on paper, which allows for a diverse and interesting range of approaches to the medium of watercolour. Its members, or associates, use the postnominal initials RWS. They are elected by the membership, with typically half a dozen new associates joining the Society each year. Royal Hibernian Academy
The Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) is an artist-based and artist-oriented institution in Ireland, founded in Dublin in 1823. Like many other Irish institutions, such as the RIA, the academy retained the word "Royal" after most of Ireland became independent as the Irish Free State in December 1922. History The RHA was founded as the result of 30 Irish artists petitioning the government for a charter of incorporation.
