Maatschappij Tot Nut Van 't Algemeen
The Maatschappij tot Nut van 't Algemeen (Nut for short; Society for Public Welfare) is a non-profit organization in the Netherlands founded in 1784 with the purpose of developing individuals and society, primarily through education. It had great influence in improving public education through better textbooks, model schools and teacher's training. The society continues to be involved in extracurricular education. Origins At the end of the 18th century there were many freethinkers and believers in democracy in the Netherlands, who felt that better education would bring greater prosperity for all. A group of friends of the Baptist minister Jan Nieuwenhuijzen from Monnickendam and Edam in North Holland decided to found a society that would help underprivileged people gain education by providing them with books written in simple language. Monnickendam
Monnickendam () is a city in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Waterland, and lies on the coast of the Markermeer, about southeast of Purmerend. It received city rights in 1355 and was damaged by the fires of 1500 and 1513. History Monnikendam was also the name of a number of warships built at the port of the same name during the Anglo-Dutch Wars. The town was founded by monks, the name Monnickendam translates as 'Monk's dam'. Monnickendam was a separate municipality until 1991, when it was merged into Waterland. Although it is a small fishing village today, it was an important port in earlier centuries. It possesses a seventeenth-century weigh house, once used by merchants and port officials, and a bell tower that dates from 1591. Folk University
The People's University of Amsterdam, also known as Volks Universiteit Amsterdam or Folk University, is a course centre for adults in Amsterdam. In 1784, the Dutch Maatschappij tot Nut van 't Algemeen was founded. Around 1900, there were about 20 so-called “Toynbee-associations”to English example adult education offered to the lowest social classes. Volksuniversiteit Amsterdam was founded in 1913 and has various study centres in Amsterdam. Since 2016, the Volksuniversiteit Amsterdam works together with the Amsterdam Public Library (Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam). Willemsfonds
The Willemsfonds, named after Jan Frans Willems, is a non-profit cultural organisation founded in the 19th century to promote Flemish culture and language in Belgium. In order to achieve this goal, the organisation encouraged Flemish folk song, organised linguistic games and published inexpensive Flemish books. In addition, the organisation established general libraries. Nowadays, the Willemsfonds is still a volunteer organisation and a meeting place for cultural activities. It seeks to promote a dialogue between people in order to allow them to form their own opinion. The Willemsfonds is of liberal inspiration, which distinguishes it from the socialist Vermeylenfonds and the Catholic Davidsfonds. William I (Willem Frederik, Prince of Orange-Nassau; 24 August 1772 – 12 December 1843) was a Prince of Orange, the King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg. He was the son of the last Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic, who went into exile to London in 1795 because of the Batavian Revolution. As compensation for the loss of all his father's possessions in the Low Countries, an agreement was concluded between France and Prussia in which William was appointed ruler of the newly created Principality of Nassau-Orange-Fulda in 1803; this was however short-lived and in 1806 he was deposed by Napoleon. Nieuwenhoorn
Nieuwenhoorn is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is located in the municipality of Voorne aan Zee, about 3 km north of Hellevoetsluis city centre. History The village was first mentioned in 1390 as "van den nuwen hoern", and is named after the shoals south of the eponymous ''polder'' which was created in 1386. Nieuw (new) has been added to distinguish from Oudenhoorn. Nieuwenhoorn developed as a dike village. In 1821, the Dorpsstraat (village street) was widened and it started to transform into a front street village. The Dutch Reformed church is a single aisled church with a modest tower. The tower probably dates from the 15th century. The nave dates from the early 16th century. In 1851, the transept and choir were demolished to be replaced by a consistory in neoclassic style. Zwolle () is a city and municipality in the Northeastern Netherlands. Sommelsdijk
Sommelsdijk is a village on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee, South Holland, the Netherlands, and part of the municipality of the same name. Sommelsdijk has (1 January 2022) 7,195 inhabitants which makes it the second largest settlement after Middelharnis on the island. In the past, Sommelsdijk was the only place on the island of Goeree-Overflakee that was part of the province of Zeeland. In 1805 it was made a part of Holland, and remained such under the amendment of the Dutch Constitution of 1814. Early March 1941 during the Second World War, nearly two hundred young men from Sommelsdijk were incarcerated for one month because of insulting the German army and the Dutch police. Middelharnis
Middelharnis () is a town and former municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland, on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee. The town had a population of about 6,800 in 2012. On 1 January 2013, Middelharnis merged with Goedereede, Dirksland, and Oostflakkee into the new municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee.
