MV Tustumena
M/V ''Tustumena'' is a mainline ferry vessel for the Alaska Marine Highway System. ''Tustumena'' was constructed in 1963 by Christy Corporation in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and refurbished in 1969 in San Francisco. As the only mainline ferry in South-central Alaska and the Aleutian Chain, it principally runs between Kodiak, Seldovia, Port Lions, and Homer with Homer providing a road link to the other communities on the Kenai Peninsula. The only interruptions from this schedule occur when making a voyage out the Aleutian Chain (the Aleutian Chain run consists of the communities of Akutan, Chignik, Cold Bay, False Pass, King Cove, Sand Point, and Unalaska/Dutch Harbor) which the vessel undergoes eight times a year all of which occur during the summer as winter weather becomes too dangerous. Homer ( Dena'ina: ''Tuggeght'') is a city in Kenai Peninsula Borough in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is southwest of Anchorage. According to the 2020 Census, the population is 5,522, up from 5,003 in 2010. Long known as the "Halibut Fishing Capital of the World", Homer is also nicknamed "the end of the road", and more recently, "the cosmic hamlet by the sea". Geography Homer is located at 59°38'35" North, 151°31'33" West (59.643059, −151.525900). The only road into Homer is the Sterling Highway. Homer is on the shore of Kachemak Bay on the southwest side of the Kenai Peninsula. The ''Homer News'' is a weekly newspaper published in Homer, Alaska since 1964. The newspaper began circulation in January 1964. Founders Hall and Marion Thorn had moved a few years earlier to Homer, where Hal's parents were longtime residents. In the Thorns' hands, the Homer News was a product of the battle over incorporation. Its own motto, "Aims for Progress," reflected the views of those who saw incorporation as a step into the modern age. Homer News switched its name to Homer Weekly News from 1973 to 1976 and back to Homer News on 1976. Now 55 years later and several ownership changes later, the newspaper is still serving the original goal of reporting the local news. Dutch Harbor is a harbor on Amaknak Island in Unalaska, Alaska. It was the location of the Battle of Dutch Harbor in June 1942, and was one of the few sites in the United States to be subjected to aerial bombardment by a foreign power during World War II.
