MV Derrycunihy (1943)
MV ''Derrycunihy'' (MTS T72) was a British cargo ship impressed as a military transport during the Second World War. She was sunk off the Normandy beaches with great loss of life in 1944. Construction ''Derrycunihy'' was general purpose cargo ship of 10,200 tons built (yard number 275) by Burntisland Shipbuilding Company for McGowan & Gross of London. Because of critical shipping requirements during the Second World War she had been built at great speed: her keel was laid on 22 June 1943, she was launched on 11 November the same year, and was delivered on 26 February 1944. She immediately came under the overall control of the Ministry of War Transport as Motor Transport Ship (MTS) T72, and guns were fitted fore and aft (manned by Royal Navy gunners). Burntisland Shipbuilding Company
The Burntisland Shipbuilding Company was a shipbuilder and repairer in Burntisland, Fife, Scotland that was founded in 1918. In 1969 it was taken over by Robb-Caledon Shipbuilders, which in turn was nationalised in 1977 as part of British Shipbuilders. In the 1970s the Burntisland yard switched from shipbuilding to prefabricating modules of superstructure for offshore oil platforms, but orders were intermittent and by the 1980s the yard was largely idle. In 1990 new owners returned the yard to production as Burntisland Fabrications or BiFab, resuming the manufacture of superstructure modules for oil platforms. Under a management buyout in 2001 the Burntisland yard returned to being an independent company. Lieutenant colonel (United Kingdom), Lieutenant-Colonel Francis Gordon Ward Lane Fox (formerly Jackson), (14 October 1899 – 31 July 1989) was a British Army Officer (armed forces), officer and prominent Yorkshire landowner. Lionel Frederic Ellis CVO CBE DSO MC (13 May 1885 – 19 October 1970) was a British Army officer and military historian, author of three volumes of the official ''History of the Second World War''. Between the two World Wars, he was General Secretary of the National Council of Social Service (1919–1937) and then Secretary of the National Fitness Council (1937–1939). In the 1950s he was an Associate Warden of Toynbee Hall. Career Born in Nottingham, in 1916 Ellis was commissioned into the Welsh Guards from the Inns of Court Officers' Training Corps and saw service in the First World War. Ellis was awarded a Military Cross "for conspicuous gallantry and resource" while leading an attack under machine-gun fire and rose to the rank of captain. ''Argobeam'' was a cargo ship which was built in 1945 as ''Empire Calshot'' for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). In 1946 she was sold and renamed ''Derrycunihy''. A further sale in 1952 saw her renamed ''Argobeam''. In August 1955 an engine room fire left her listing 40° to port and she was abandoned. She was salvaged, repaired and sold, being renamed ''Parkgate''. In 1960 she was sold to Panama and renamed ''Panagos'', serving until scrapped in 1968. The Battle for Caen (June to August 1944) is the name given to fighting between the British Second Army and the German in the Second World War for control of the city of Caen and its vicinity during the larger Battle of Normandy. The battles followed Operation Neptune, the Allied landings on the French coast on 6 June 1944 (D-Day). Caen is about inland from the Calvados coast astride the Orne River and Caen Canal, at the junction of several roads and railways. Royal Observer Corps
The Royal Observer Corps (ROC) was a civil defence organisation intended for the visual detection, identification, tracking and reporting of aircraft over Great Britain. It operated in the United Kingdom between 29 October 1925 and 31 December 1995, when the Corps' civilian volunteers were stood down (ROC headquarters staff at RAF Bentley Priory stood down on 31 March 1996).
