Malayan United Industries Berhad (MUI; ) was founded in 1960, and owned by Khoo Kay Peng. The main businesses of the group includes retailing, hotels, food and confectionery, financial services, property, travel and tourism. The group has business presence in the UK, Continental Europe, the US, Canada, the UAE, Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, Hong Kong, China, Japan and Singapore. Some of the major company names in MUI group includes Metrojaya Berhad, Laura Ashley plc, Corus Hotels and Network Foods. The company also purchased evangelist Jim Bakker's bankrupt Heritage USA Christian resort and theme park in Fort Mill, South Carolina, in 1991 and operated it for a number of years under its subsidiary, Regent Carolina Corporation, before selling the property in the mid-2000s. Khoo Kay Peng
Tan Sri Khoo Kay Peng (; born December 1939) is a Malaysian Chinese businessman. He is the chairman and a major shareholder of Laura Ashley plc, and the owner of MUI Group. Early life Khoo Kay Peng was born in December 1939. Career Khoo was mentored by Khoo Teck Puat, who founded Malayan Banking in 1960. Khoo joined the new bank and soon became a manager. In 1965, he was seconded to Bank Bumiputra, and quickly rose to a senior position. In his ten years there, he built relationships with Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, Robert Kuok and Tan Koon Swan. He left in 1976 to start his own business, developing property in Kuala Lumpur with a loan from Southern Banking, which made him a millionaire. In 1976, he bought a major stake in MUI Group, then a manufacturer of toothbrushes and household utensils, and used it as a vehicle for a series of corporate takeovers, growing MUI to a $91 million pre-tax profit in 1984. Heritage USA was an American Christian-themed water park, theme park and residential complex in Fort Mill, South Carolina, built by televangelist Jim Bakker and his wife Tammy Faye Bakker, founders of ''The PTL Club''. Jim Bakker
James Orsen Bakker (; born January 2, 1940) is an American televangelist and convicted fraudster. Between 1974 and 1987, Bakker hosted the television program ''The PTL Club'' and its cable television platform, the PTL Satellite Network, with his then wife, Tammy Faye. He also developed Heritage USA, a now-defunct Christian theme park in Fort Mill, South Carolina. In the late 1980s, Bakker resigned from the PTL ministry over a cover-up of hush money to church secretary Jessica Hahn for an alleged rape. Subsequent revelations of accounting fraud brought about felony charges, conviction, imprisonment, and divorce. Bakker later remarried and returned to televangelism, founding Morningside Church in Blue Eye, Missouri, and reestablishing the PTL ministry.
