Multiple Sclerosis Australia, commonly referred to as MS Australia, is a national non-profit organization which conducts research and advocacy in support of individuals affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS). MS Australia was registered as a charitable entity in Australia in the year 1975. As of July 2021, there were over 25,000 people living with multiple sclerosis in Australia and MS Australia assists Australians living with or otherwise affected by MS. The organisation characterises its approach as one that leverages Australia's unique strengths within the broader global landscape of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) research. Sylvia Lawry
Sylvia Lawry (née: Friedman; born in Brooklyn, New York, June 28, 1915) was a social campaigner on behalf of people with multiple sclerosis. She founded the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (United States) in 1947 and co-founded the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation in the same year. Lawry was at university studying law when her brother Bernard Friedman was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The family's experience prompted Lawry to place an advert in ''The New York Times'' seeking others affected by the disease. She received 50 replies. Recognising the need for more research and information, she brought together 20 prominent research scientists and went on to form the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. In 1965 Lawry called a meeting in Vienna, Austria, to persuade more countries to join the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation. The Multiple Sclerosis International Federation (MSIF) was established in 1967 as an international body linking the activities of National MS societies around the world. The Federation seeks to work in worldwide partnership with Member Societies and the international scientific community to eliminate multiple sclerosis and its consequences, and to speak out globally on behalf of those affected by multiple sclerosis. Multiple Sclerosis Society Of Great Britain
The Multiple Sclerosis Society (MS Society) is the UK's largest charity for people affected by multiple sclerosis (MS). Based in London, it has offices and local groups in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It gained charitable company status in 2010. The organisation funds research, campaigns for social and political change and provides services that help people with multiple sclerosis and their families. It also compiles the only report of its kind on prevalence and living situations for people with MS across the UK. It is currently (2020) a member of the Neurological Alliance and the Progressive MS Alliance which focuses on progressive multiple sclerosis. Multiple Sclerosis Research Australia, better known as MS Research Australia, is a national not-for-profit organisation that coordinates and funds multiple sclerosis research in Australia.
