MSI World Scrabble Championship 2016
The MSI World Scrabble Championship 2016 was a Scrabble tournament organised by Mattel and Mindsports International (MSI) to determine the world champion in English Scrabble. It was held from 31 August to 4 September 2016 in Lille, France. The event was split into two divisions based on players' World English-Language Scrabble Players' Association (WESPA) ratings. The top division comprised some 72 players. 24 games were played on the first three days, after which the top eight proceeded to a 3-game quarterfinals, with the winners advancing to a 5-game semifinals on the same day; the top two players, Brett Smitheram and Mark Nyman, played a best-of-five final the day after for the top prize of €7,000. Scrabble
''Scrabble'' is a word game in which two to four players score points by placing tiles, each bearing a single letter, onto a game board divided into a 15×15 grid of squares. The tiles must form words that, in crossword fashion, read left to right in rows or downward in columns and are included in a standard dictionary or lexicon. Dave Wiegand
Dave Wiegand (born July 22, 1974) is an American Scrabble player who won the National Scrabble Championship in 2005 and 2009. Wiegand placed second in the same event in 1994 and third in 2000. He also finished eighth (of 102 competitors) in the World Scrabble Championship 2005. Since his career began in 1985, he has played nearly 4000 tournament games, winning more than two thirds of his games and has earned over $115,000 in prize money, ranking fifth among all players. In the 2009 NSC, Wiegand defeated defending champion and top seed Nigel Richards in the tournament's final two games to earn his second national title. Periagua
Periagua (from Spanish ''piragua'', in turn derived from the Carib language word for dugout) is the term formerly used in the Caribbean and the eastern seaboard of North America for a range of small craft including canoes and small sailing vessels. The term ''periagua'' overlaps, but is not synonymous with, ''pirogue'', derived through the French language from ''piragua''. The original periaguas or piraguas were the dugout canoes encountered by the Spanish in the Caribbean. Small craft of greater capacity were created by splitting a dugout and inserting a plank bottom, while the freeboard was increased for sea voyages by adding planks on the sides. Braconidae
The Braconidae are a family of parasitoid wasps. After the closely related Ichneumonidae, braconids make up the second-largest family in the order Hymenoptera, with about 17,000 recognized species and many thousands more undescribed. One analysis estimated a total between 30,000 and 50,000, and another provided a narrower estimate between 42,000 and 43,000 species. World Scrabble Championship 1993
The World Scrabble Championship 1993 was the second World Scrabble Championship. The winner was Mark Nyman, representing the United Kingdom, as this was before the countries of the UK were given individual representation. The first 15 rounds used modified Swiss pairing. After this, players #1 and #3 and players #2 and #4 played a best-of-five semifinal to determine the finalists while the remaining 64 players played three more games. The semifinals were followed by a best-of-five finals while the two other semifinalists played a best-of-five match to determine third and fourth place. The first game of the finals looked like it would go Nyman's way when he bingoed with MUTAGENIC from an MU on his second play and then challenged off Wapnick's DOX. Moiz Ullah Baig
Moiz Ullah Baig (born April 1997 in Karachi, Pakistan) is a Pakistani Scrabble player who won the World Youth Scrabble Championship 2013 and the World Junior Scrabble Championship 2018, becoming the first player ever to win both. He won the Pakistan Scrabble Championship in 2018 and is currently the number 1 player of the country. In December 2018, with a WESPA rating of 1921, he climbed up to the 71st place in the world rankings – his career highest. Moiz was conferred with a gold medal by Nazaria-i-Pakistan Trust in 2014 for his achievements in Scrabble. He was mentioned alongside Nobel Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai, Asma Jahangir, and several others in the Newsline Magazine, on being one of the Pakistanis who have made a prominent mark internationally. Allan Simmons
Allan Simmons (born 27 July 1957) is a British scrabble expert who was one of the founder members of the Association of British Scrabble Players and succeeded Peter Finley as its chairman. He was the first chairman of the World English-language Scrabble Players Association. He was also the 2008 UK National Scrabble Champion. In addition to playing top level Scrabble since the late-1970s, Simmons is also known as a prolific author of Scrabble books and publisher of Onwords magazine since 1979. Together with Darryl Francis he has produced every edition of Official Scrabble Words by Chambers and has more recently worked with HarperCollins on their official wordlist book. He also previously wrote a weekly Scrabble column for ''The Times'', compiles a weekly Scrabble puzzle for The Telegraph, and compiles the content for an annual desktop Scrabble puzzle calendar.
