MLB On 5 Live
MLB on 5 Live is the banner title for all live Major League Baseball commentary broadcast on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra. The show began on July 4, 2010 and was originally hosted by Jonny Gould and Josh Chetwynd, with Nat Coombs hosting when Gould was unavailable. For the 2011 season, Coombs took over hosting duties from Gould on a full-time basis, with Simon Brotherton in turn covering when Coombs is unavailable. For the 2010 and 2011 Major League Baseball seasons, the show was typically aired live from 18:00 or 19:00 on a Sunday evening. unless there was a clash with 5 Live Sport Extra's other live commentary commitments. For 2012, this moved to Thursdays at 18:00 with Coombs & Chetwynd once again the presenting duo. MLB on 5 Live also broadcast special live commentary of Opening Day (2012–present), the All-Star Game (2010–present), as well as live coverage of every game of the World Series (2010–present). Major League Baseball (MLB) is a professional baseball organization and the oldest major professional sports league in the world. MLB is composed of 30 total teams, divided equally between the National League (NL) and the American League (AL), with 29 in the United States and 1 in Canada. The NL and AL were formed in 1876 and 1901, respectively. Beginning in 1903, the two leagues signed the National Agreement and cooperated but remained legally separate entities until 2000, when they merged into a single organization led by the Commissioner of Baseball. BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra
BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra (formerly BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra) is a national digital radio station in the United Kingdom, operated by the BBC, and specialising in extended live sports coverage. It is a sister station to BBC Radio 5 Live and shares facilities, presenters and management, and is a department of the BBC North Group division. If a news story breaks during the live sport broadcasts on 5 Live, the sports coverage will be redirected and continued on 5 Sports Extra, whilst 5 Live switches to live news. The station is only available on digital radio, television platforms and BBC Sounds. Due to licensing reasons, since 25 July 2016, international streaming of the station has not been available. Jonathan Gould (presenter)
Jonathan Michael Gould (born 1961 in Kenya) is a British television presenter and charity fundraiser. He is best known for hosting the late-night baseball show ''MLB on Five'' from 1997 until 2008, which soon built up a cult following on the newly-launched Channel 5. He has been described as 'a near ubiquitous presence at London charity fundraising dinners' Education Gould attended Epsom College, where he was active in school plays and captained the college cricket team. He left in 1979 with A-Levels in Economics, History and English, which he himself says were "highly unsatisfactory", but nonetheless obtained a place at Durham University. He was a member of the Hatfield College rugby team and the Durham University Sensible Thespians (DUST) sketch group, which would later be renamed the Durham Revue. Josh Chetwynd
Joshua Stephen Chetwynd (born September 11, 1971) is a British-born American journalist, broadcaster, author, sports agent and former baseball player. He has also competed in the sport of curling. Journalism Chetwynd has worked as a staff reporter for USA Today, The Hollywood Reporter and U.S. News & World Report. His writing has also appeared in such publications/websites as The Wall Street Journal, The Times (of London), Chicago Tribune, MLB.com, Harvard Negotiation Law Review, The Observer Sport Monthly, and Variety. He was a two-time winner of the Los Angeles Press Club Award for best newspaper article written by a correspondent (1999 and 2000). In 2022, Chetwynd received a SABR Baseball Research Award for an article he wrote in Nine: A Journal of Baseball History and Cuture. Nathaniel George Terence Coombs (born August 1977) is a British television and radio presenter, and writer. Education Coombs was educated at the boys' independent school Dulwich College in Dulwich, South London, and at University College London. Simon Brotherton
Simon Charles Brotherton is a sports commentator for the BBC, appearing on Match of the Day and BBC Radio Five Live, as well as BT Sport television. Brotherton was still at school when he began his career with BBC Local Radio and developed further while he was studying at Birmingham University where he joined Birmingham's local BBC radio station WM. In 1990 Brotherton joined the BBC network, where, as well as commentating on the Premier League, he has commentated on a variety of football tournaments including the FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 1996, UEFA Euro 2000, UEFA Euro 2004, UEFA Euro 2008, UEFA Euro 2012, UEFA Euro 2016, the African Cup of Nations, the UEFA Champions League Final and the UEFA Cup/ UEFA Europa League Final.
