MARTa Herford
MARTa Herford is a contemporary art museum in Herford, Germany. Building and history The idea for the museum formed in 2000, drawing from Herford's status as a German center of furniture and home furnishing production. The name ''MARTa'' is an acronym for ''Möbel'' (German for ''furniture''), ''ART'' (simply ''art'' in English), and ''Ambiente'' (ambience). The founding director of the museum was Jan Hoet, a noted Belgian curator. took over as director in 2009. The building was designed by Frank Gehry and built by Archimedes GmbH. Construction began in 2001, and it officially opened to the public on May 7, 2005. Herford (; nds, Hiarwede) is a town in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, located in the lowlands between the hill chains of the Wiehen Hills and the Teutoburg Forest. It is the capital of the district of Herford (district), Herford. Geography Geographic location The former Hanseatic League, Hanseatic town of Herford is situated in the chain of hills south of the Wiehen Hills (Ravensberg Hills). Knight Jan Hoet (; 23 June 1936 – 27 February 2014) was the Belgian founder of SMAK (''Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst'' or Municipal Museum for Contemporary Art) in Ghent, Belgium. Biography Jan Hoet was born in Leuven, Belgium. Throughout his career, he was often referred to in the press as a former boxer (he pursued the sport in college) and several times expressed an admiration for Mike Tyson. In the late 1960s and early 1970s he and photographer Rony Heirman made some comics together. His international reputation was first established by "Chambres d'Amis," an innovative exhibition he organized in Ghent in 1986. Herford () is a ''Kreis'' (district) in the northeastern part of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Neighboring districts are Minden-Lübbecke, Lippe, the urban district of Bielefeld, and the districts Gütersloh and Osnabrück. History The region is also known as ''Wittekind's land'', as the last fights of Wittekind's Saxon tribes against Charlemagne took place here. He is believed to be buried in the town of Enger.
