M39 Road (Johannesburg)
The M39 is a long metropolitan route in Greater Johannesburg, South Africa. It connects Kyalami with Germiston via Midrand, Kempton Park & Isando. Route The M39 begins at a junction with the R55 road in Kyalami Gardens, at the entrance to the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit. It goes east-south-east into the southern suburbs of Midrand as Allandale Road, bypassing Vorna Valley, to bypass the Mall of Africa and form an interchange with the N1 Highway (Ben Schoeman Freeway) before meeting the R101 road (Old Pretoria Main Road). The M39 continues south-east as Allandale Road, then as Chloorkop Road, bypassing the Austin View suburb of Midrand, to meet the southern terminus of the M18 road (Andrew Mapheto Drive) at a T-junction just south-west of the Thembisa Township. Midrand
Midrand is a former municipality in central Gauteng, South Africa. It is situated in-between Centurion and Sandton and now forms part of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. History Midrand was established as a municipality in 1981 (in an area known as ''Halfway House'', after its position between Pretoria and Johannesburg), but ceased to be an independent town in the restructuring of local government that followed the end of apartheid in 1994. It was incorporated in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality in 2000. It was made part of Region 2 and, as of 2006, when the number of regions were reduced to seven, it forms part of Region A of the City of Johannesburg. Though no longer an independent town, the name Midrand is still in common use to denote the suburbs around the N1 highway north of the Jukskei River up to the border with City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality. Mall of Africa is a shopping mall located in Waterfall City, Midrand, Gauteng. It is the third largest single-phase shopping mall to be built in Africa, but smaller than Gateway, Sandton City, Menlyn Park and Fourways Mall. The total retail area is 130 000 square metres. The shopping mall has two main levels of shopping as well as an outdoor restaurant plaza which connects directly to the Waterfall City Park. History Mall of Africa was incepted to be the centrepiece of Waterfall City, an upcoming mixed-use development located in Midrand, Gauteng. Located between Johannesburg and Pretoria the Mall and Waterfall is easily accessible to most of Gauteng. The N12 is a national route in South Africa which runs from George through Beaufort West, Kimberley, Klerksdorp and Johannesburg to eMalahleni. It is the only other National Route after the N1 Route that connects the Western Cape Province with the Gauteng Province. Prior to 1971, the N12 from Johannesburg to Three Sisters was known as the N13. Route Summary The road starts in George in the Western Cape and ends in eMalahleni in Mpumalanga. The road runs roughly from south to north, however, once it passes Kimberley in the Northern Cape, it gradually turns eastward. It connects the Elandsfontein industrial suburb in the northern part of Germiston with Petit in the north-eastern part of Benoni. Route The M44 begins in the industrialized suburb of Elandsfontein (south of Isando) in the northern part of Germiston, at a junction with the M39 Road (Barbara Road). It begins by going eastwards as North Reef Road to reach a junction with the M57 Road (Kraft Road). The M57 joins the M44 and they are one road eastwards up to the next junction, where the M57 becomes its own road northwards towards Kempton Park. The entire route is in the western part of the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, particularly in Kempton Park and Edenvale. Route The M99 begins at a junction with the M57 Road (Pretoria Road) near O. R. Tambo International Airport in the southern part of Kempton Park. It begins by going eastwards towards the airport and at the next junction, the M99 turns north, then west, via a left turn to pass under the M57 and head westwards. The R24 is a major East-West provincial route in the Gauteng and North West provinces that links OR Tambo International Airport with Rustenburg via Johannesburg, Krugersdorp and Magaliesburg. The process of renaming the streets and freeway that form the route from Krugersdorp eastward to OR Tambo International after anti-apartheid stalwart Albertina Sisulu was completed in 2013. After passing through Central Johannesburg and some of Johannesburg's eastern suburbs (a section maintained by the Johannesburg Roads Agency, a department of the City of Johannesburg), the route becomes a freeway outside Eastgate Shopping Centre in Bedfordview, a section which is maintained by the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport, part of the Gauteng Provincial Government. M16 is a metropolitan route in Johannesburg, South Africa. It begins in the north-western suburb of Greenside and heads eastwards through some of Johannesburg's northern suburbs and through Edenvale to end at the East Rand town of Kempton Park. Route Starting at an intersection with the M71 (Barry Hertzog Avenue) in Greenside, the route heads east as Greenhill Road to Parkview Golf Club. It then crosses the golf course and the Braamfontein Spruit as Wicklow Avenue.
