Musée Denys-Puech
The Musée Denys-Puech is an art gallery in Rodez, France. It was founded in 1910 by the sculptor Denys Puech (1854–1942), winner of the prix de Rome in 1884 and one of the official sculptors of the French Third Republic. The building was completed in 1910 by the architect André Boyer, who designed a ground floor with large bays to enhance the sculpture collection. History After having offered the city of Rodez a large collection of sculptures and drawings, the sculptor Denys Puech (1854–1942) convinced his friends, the orientalist painter Maurice Bompard (1857–1935) and the engraver Eugène Viala (1858–1913), to donate some of their works to build the collections of the future museum. It was inaugurated on July 17, 1910. The building was designed by the architect André Boyer (1882–1953). A ground floor with large windows highlights the collection of sculptures. Denys Puech
Denys Puech (3 December 1854, Gavernac, Bozouls, Aveyron – December 1942, Rodez, Aveyron) was a French sculptor. Biography From a family of farmers (his brother was Louis Puech, Député for the Seine Department from 1898 to 1932, and Minister of Public Works from 3 November 1910 to 27 February 1911), he began as an apprentice in the marble workshop of François Mahoux in Rodez. Prix De Rome
The Prix de Rome () or Grand Prix de Rome was a French scholarship for arts students, initially for painters and sculptors, that was established in 1663 during the reign of Louis XIV of France. Winners were awarded a bursary that allowed them to stay in Rome for three to five years at the expense of the state. The prize was extended to architecture in 1720, music in 1803 and engraving in 1804. The prestigious award was abolished in 1968 by André Malraux, then Minister of Culture, following the May 68 riots that called for cultural change. In art history, literature and cultural studies, Orientalism is the imitation or depiction of aspects in the Eastern world. Maurice Bompard (painter)
Jean Maurice Bompard (11 February 1857 – 1936) was a French Orientalist painter; one of the founders of the Société des Peintres Orientalistes Français. Biography He was born in Rodez. At a very young age, in 1865, his family moved to Marseille, where he later studied painting with Dominique Antoine Magaud. He then went to Paris, where he was a student of the Orientalist Gustave Boulanger and the history painter Jules Lefebvre, at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. His first exhibit was in 1878. Four years later, he obtained a grant that enabled him to visit Germany, Italy, Spain and Tunisia. Not long after returning, in 1889, he married Amélie Perretti, and they immediately set off for a three-month stay in Biskra. Eugène Viala
Eugène Viala (8 September 1859, Salles-Curan - 5 March 1913, Salles-Curan) was a French watercolorist and engraver. Biography He began his studies in 1877 at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier, then, in 1881, enrolled at the Académie Julian in Paris. He married Berthe Ducroët, from Saint-Geniez-d'Olt, in 1888. They had four children. His paintings were not successful, partly on account of his physical isolation and lack of social connections, but he excelled in his engravings. Many of these were issued as postcards. His style was generally a combination of romanticism and symbolism. He had several literary friends, notably Remy de Gourmont, the Symbolist poet. François Morellet
François Morellet (30 April 1926 – 10 May 2016) was a French contemporary abstract painter, sculptor, and light artist. His early work prefigured minimal art and conceptual art and he played a prominent role in the development of geometrical abstract art and post-conceptual art.
