Singapore has a diverse music culture that ranges from rock and pop to folk and classical. Its various communities have their own distinct musical traditions: the Chinese form the largest ethnic group in Singapore, with Malays, Indians as well as a smaller number of other peoples of different ethnicities including Eurasians. Dr Liang Wern Fook (; born 1964 in Singapore) is a Cantonese Singaporean writer, musician, singer and researcher in Chinese literature and pedagogy. He was one of the pioneer figures in ''xinyao'' (Singaporean Chinese folk songs) movement in the 1980s and 1990s. ''Xinyao'' () is a genre of songs that is unique to Singapore. It is a contemporary Mandarin vocal genre that emerged and rose to fame in Singapore between the late 1970s to 1980s. ''Xinyao'' songs are composed and sung by Singaporeans and it is an outlet for them to express their thoughts and feelings around themes like friendships or love stories. Datuk Ramli Sarip (born 15 October 1952), also known as "Papa Rock", is a Singaporean musician, singer, songwriter, arranger and record producer. He is also one of the pioneers of Singapore's rock scene. Ramli was the front man and lead singer of the Singapore-based heavy metal-rock group Sweet Charity until 1986. Ismail Haron (full name: Ismail bin Harun) (13 May 1946 – 9 April 2012) was a Singaporean singer. Biography Haron was born in Killiney Road, Singapore. The first group he joined was Valiants. He was with them for only a few months. Then he teamed up with Vigilantes some of whom were his secondary school classmates, to record their first EP under the Eagle label, with a series of Malay songs adapted from English hits, namely "Senyuman Terakhir" ("Green Green Grass Of Home"), "Pulang Pada-Ku", "Mari Sayang" ("Hang On Sloopy") and "Mari Menari" ("La Bamba").
