''Music from Man of La Mancha'' is a studio album by Brazilian jazz pianist and singer Eliane Elias. The album was recorded in 1995 but released by Concord only on April 13, 2018. Background ''Music from Man of La Mancha'' is Elias' 26th full-length album. The tracks for the album were recorded as early as in 1995 and produced by Elias together with Mitch Leigh, the late composer of the music for the Broadway musical ''Man of La Mancha'' that premiered in 1964. The production was inspired by an earlier, 1959 non-musical stage production, '' I, Don Quixote'', itself inspired by Miguel de Cervantes' 17th-century masterpiece '' Don Quixote''. The album was not released for so long because of contractual limitations; Leigh passed in 2014 and never saw its release. Chart performance The album debuted at No. 1 on the ''Billboard'' magazine Traditional Jazz Chart and No. 20 on Top Heatseekers one week after its release. Biography Elias was born in São Paulo, Brazil on 19 March 1960. She started studying piano when she was seven, and at age twelve she was transcribing solos from jazz musicians. She began teaching piano when she was fifteen, and began performing at seventeen with Brazilian singer-songwriter Toquinho and touring with the poet Vinicius de Moraes. In 1981 she moved to New York City, where she attended The Juilliard School of Music. A year later she became part of the group Steps Ahead. I, Don Quixote
''I, Don Quixote'' is a non-musical play written for television and directed by Karl Genus. It was broadcast in season 3 of the CBS anthology series ''DuPont Show of the Month'' on the evening of November 9, 1959. Written by Dale Wasserman, the play was converted by him ca. 1964 into the libretto for the stage musical ''Man of La Mancha'', with songs by Mitch Leigh and Joe Darion. After a tryout at Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut, ''Man of La Mancha'' opened in New York on November 22, 1965, at the ANTA Washington Square Theatre. The title of the 1959 teleplay was originally ''Man of La Mancha'', but sponsor DuPont Corp. objected and producer David Susskind changed it to the more specific ''I, Don Quixote'', fearing that the TV audience would not know who Wasserman was referring to if the original title was used. Manolo Badrena (born March 17, 1952, in San Juan, Puerto Rico) is a percussionist most noted for his work with Weather Report from 1976 to 1977. He has made contributions to over 100 recordings that span jazz, world music, pop, and Latin music. Badrena has played with The Zawinul Syndicate, the Rolling Stones, Mezzoforte, Joni Mitchell, Spyro Gyra, Art Blakey, Bill Evans, Steve Khan, Carla Bley, Talking Heads, Blondie, Michael Franks, Ahmad Jamal, Hugo Fattoruso, and others. Marc Alan Johnson (born October 21, 1953, in Omaha, Nebraska) is an American jazz bass player, composer and band leader. Johnson was born in Nebraska and grew up in Texas. He is married to the Brazilian jazz pianist and singer Eliane Elias. Career At the age of 19, Johnson was working professionally with the Fort Worth Symphony, and while at the University of North Texas, he played in the One O'Clock Lab Band and was also the principal bassist in the NTSU Symphony. In 1978, Johnson joined pianist Bill Evans in what would be Evans's last trio. Johnson toured and recorded with Evans until the death of the pianist in 1980.
