Museum Of Electrical Transport (Saint Petersburg)
The Museum of Electrical Transport is located on Vasilyevsky Island in Saint Petersburg, Russia. History The museum was established in 1967, and is the oldest museum of electrical transport in Russia. It is based at the old Vasileostrovsky tram depot in Saint Petersburg which was built in 1906–1908. To celebrate the 90th anniversary of the St. Petersburg tram, examples of the trams that have been used in St. Petersburg have been restored. There are also static exhibits: archival documents and photos, cards, breadboard models of horsecars and trams, examples of tram worker uniforms, and original cash registers. On 21 May 2011, the museum took part in the Long Night of Museums event for the first time Exhibits The museum's collection includes 45 trams and 18 trolleys. Vasilyevsky Island
Vasilyevsky Island (russian: Васи́льевский о́стров, Vasilyevsky Ostrov, V.O.) is an island in St. Petersburg, Russia, bordered by the Bolshaya Neva and Malaya Neva Rivers (in the delta of the Neva River) in the south and northeast, and by Neva Bay of the Gulf of Finland in the west. Vasilyevsky Island is separated from Dekabristov Island by the Smolenka River. Together they form the territory of Vasileostrovsky District, an administrative division of Saint Petersburg. Situated just across the river from the Winter Palace, it constitutes a large portion of the city's historic center. Two of the most famous St. Petersburg bridges, Palace Bridge and Blagoveshchensky Bridge, connect it with the mainland to the south. The LM-49 (Russian ''ЛМ-49'') is the Soviet motor four-axle tramcar. The first prototype of this vehicle was built in 1949 (hence the 49 in the name) at the Leningrad Wagon Repair Plant (VARZ, ВАРЗ, Ленинградский Вагоноремонтный Завод - Russian abbreviature and full name). "LM" means ''Leningrad Motor'' tramcar. These tramcars were utilized in Leningrad itself and some other Soviet cities such as Minsk, Gorky] (now Nizhny Novgorod), Novokuznetsk and Magnitogorsk. The LM-57 (Russian ''ЛМ-57'') is the Soviet motor four-axle tramcar. History Hughes's Locomotive & Tramway Engine Works Henry Hughes had been operating at the Falcon Works since the 1850s, producing items such as brass and iron cast parts for portable engines and thrashing machines. In 1860 Henry Hughes announced he had entered into a partnership with William March who had extensive experience in the timber trade, and this would be added to the existing business of "engineers and manufacturers of railway plant", with the business to be called Hughes and March.
