Museum Of Contemporary Art Of Alcamo
The Museum of contemporary art of Alcamo is located in Piazza Ciullo in Alcamo, inside the Ex Collegio dei Gesuiti, near the majestic Church of Jesus. The exhibition centre, large about 400 square metres, is on the first floor; at the entrance there are an information desk, a meeting room (the old chapel of Jesuits) and a bookshop. History The museum was created in 2014 thanks to the municipal administration led by the Lord Mayor of that period, Dr. Sebastiano Bonventre M.D. In the following October they realized the ambitious project ''Creative Lab'', an integrated system of cultural services aiming at the requalification of the urban space and supporting the development of the territory; the municipality of Alcamo, the University of Palermo and the cooperatives ''Agrigest'' and ''Nido d’Argento''. Piazza Ciullo
Piazza Ciullo is the main square of Alcamo, in the province of Trapani, Sicily, Italy. Being located in the very town centre, it is a meeting place for people and an attraction for important events, especially for teenagers. History According to some historical sources, in 1500 a watercourse crossed Piazza Ciullo: the ditch, where it ran, filled up with water during winter, but after a few centuries the area took its present form. Today traces of the stream's existence are seen through the particular position of the buildings, whose profiles are made to stand out through the pavement lines after architect Gae Aulenti's restoration work. In the 16th century there were a number of houses with courts inside them and churches within the town; many houses were built on the east-west axis towards ''Porta Trapani''. Bas-relief
Relief is a sculptural method in which the sculpted pieces are bonded to a solid background of the same material. The term ''relief'' is from the Latin verb ''relevo'', to raise. To create a sculpture in relief is to give the impression that the sculpted material has been raised above the background plane. When a relief is carved into a flat surface of stone (relief sculpture) or wood (relief carving), the field is actually lowered, leaving the unsculpted areas seeming higher. The approach requires a lot of chiselling away of the background, which takes a long time. On the other hand, a relief saves forming the rear of a subject, and is less fragile and more securely fixed than a sculpture in the round, especially one of a standing figure where the ankles are a potential weak point, particularly in stone. Spatialism
Spatialism ( it, Spazialismo) is an art movement founded by Argentine-Italian artist Lucio Fontana in Milan in 1947 in which he proposed to synthesize colour, sound, space, movement, and time into a new type of art. The main ideas of the movement were anticipated in his ''Manifiesto blanco'' (White Manifesto) published in Buenos Aires in 1946. In it he spoke of a new "spatial" art in keeping with the spirit of the post-war age. It repudiated the illusory or "virtual" space of traditional easel painting and sought to unite art and science to project colour and form into real space by the use of up-to-date techniques such as neon lighting and television. Five more manifestos followed; they were more specific in their negative than their positive aspects, and carried the concept of Spatialism little further than the statement that its essence consisted in "plastic emotions and emotions of colour projected upon space". Nicola Rubino
Nicola Rubino ( Alcamo, 3 April 1905 – Rome, 25 February 1984) was an Italian sculptor and painter. Biography He was the son of Francesco and Caterina Cudia and attended the Classical Lyceum in his town. In 1925, aged only 20, he moved to Rome to study at Accademia di Belle Arti together with different artists of Scuola romana like Mafai, Omiccioli, FazziniA.A.V.V.: Nicola Rubino, Roma, tip.Eurosia and Gentilizi; in Rome he had a close friendship with artists and intellectualis like Sarra, Guttuso and Fellini. Plaster Casts
A plaster cast is a copy made in plaster of another 3-dimensional form. The original from which the cast is taken may be a sculpture, building, a face, a pregnant belly, a fossil or other remains such as fresh or fossilised footprints – particularly in palaeontology (a track of dinosaur footprints made in this way can be seen outside the Oxford University Museum of Natural History). Sometimes a blank block of plaster itself was carved to produce mock-ups or first drafts of sculptures (usually relief sculptures) that would ultimately be sculpted in stone, by measuring exactly from the cast, for example by using a pointing machine. These are still described as plaster casts. Examples of these by John Flaxman may be found in the central rotunda of the library at University College London, and elsewhere in the University's collections. Gisella Giovenco (born Ferrara, 30 January 1946) is an Italian painter, stylist and publicist. Biography Gisella Giovenco was born in 1946 in Ferrara: her father, Onofrio Giovenco (1909-2001), was a Sicilian doctor from Alcamo, while her mother, Afra Mariani, was originary from Ferrara; she has been living at Bogliasco (Genova) since 1948; she attended the Liceo Artistico Nicolò Barabino in Genoa and had the painters Bassano and Alberto Nobile, and the sculptor Valdieri Pestelli as teachers. Vito Bongiorno
Vito Bongiorno is an Italian artist known for making art out of charcoal. Biography Bongiorno was born in Alcamo (in the province of Trapani) in 1963; his childhood was eventful because of the different movings of his family. In fact, after living the terrible experience of the Belice Earthquake in 1968, he moved to Rome when he was only seven. He graduated in art school (at the Liceo Artistico Statale), where he was a pupil of Mino Delle Site, a representative of the movement of Aeropittura. In Rome he also attended some courses of life drawing, engraving and sculpture. Activity In order to enlarge his experience, he first moved to Munich, and then to New York City, where he exhibited his works, and got in touch with the most important artists.
