The Museo Nazionale Alinari della Fotografia (MNAF - National Museum Alinari of Photography), formerly ''Museo della Storia della Fotografia Fratelli Alinari'' is a photography museum located in part of the premises of the former Ospedale di San Paolo in the Piazza Santa Maria Novella in Florence, region of Tuscany, Italy). It hosts special exhibitions on a regular basis and possesses 350.000 vintage prints from the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum closed in 2012. Since 1 November 2006 it is located in the Ospedale di San Paolo, a former pilgrims' hostel that was later transformed into a school. Before that, the museum was in the Palazzo Rucellai and in the premises of the ''Fratelli Alinari''. It was the first museum of Italy to be devoted exclusively to photography. Giorgio Sommer
Giorgio Sommer (1834–1914) was one of Europe’s most important and prolific photographers of the 19th century. Active from 1857 to 1888, he produced thousands of images of archeological ruins, landscapes, art objects and portraits. He was born in Frankfurt am Main (modern-day Germany), where he studied business. Sommer opened his first photography studio in Switzerland, where he made relief images of mountains for the Swiss government. In 1856 moved his business to Naples and later (1866) formed a partnership with fellow German photographer Edmund Behles (also known as Edmondo Behles), who owned a studio in Rome. Operating from their respective Naples and Rome studios, Sommer and Behles became one of the largest and most prolific photography concerns in Italy. James Robertson (photographer)
James Robertson (1813–1888) was an English gem and coin engraver who worked in the Mediterranean region, and who became a pioneering photographer working in the Crimea and possibly India. He is noted for his Orientalist photographs and for being one of the first war photographers. Life and career Robertson was born in Middlesex in 1813. He trained as an engraver under Wyon (probably William Wyon). In 1841, he settled in Constantinople where he worked as an "engraver and die-stamper" at the Imperial Ottoman Mint. During this period, he appears to have become interested in photography. By the 1850s, tourist travel to the Near East created strong demand for photographs as souvenirs. Roberto Rive
Robert Rive was a 19th-century photographer who was born in Great Britain but developed most of his work in Italy. After several years working in this country he changed his name to Roberto Rive. The main collections of his work are the photos from Pompei and Rome in the 1860s and 1870s. Rive exhibited at the "10th Annual Exhibition of the Photographie". Photography Robert Rive worked as a topographical and portrait photographer from the beginning of the 1860s until 1889 in Naples. In 1867, he took part at the Exposition Universelle of Paris. Count Giuseppe Napoleone Primoli, in French Joseph Napoléon Primoli, (born 2 May 1851 in Rome–died 13 June 1927 in Rome) was an Italian nobleman, collector and photographer. Biography Giuseppe Primoli was born in Rome, 2 May 1851. His parents were Pietro Primoli, Count of Foglia (1820–1883) and Charlotte Bonaparte ('Carlotta', 4 March 1832 – 10 September 1901). His maternal grandparents were Charles Lucien Bonaparte and Zénaïde Bonaparte. Carlo Naya (1816 in Tronzano Vercellese1882 in Venice) was an Italian photographer known for his pictures of Venice including its works of art and views of the city for a collaborative volume in 1866. Carlo Mollino (6 May 1905 – 27 August 1973) was an Italian architect, designer, photographer and educator. Biography Carlo Mollino was born on May 6, 1905, in Turin, a major industrial city and cultural center in northwest Italy. He was the only son of Jolanda Testa (1884-1966) and Eugenio Mollino (1873-1953), a prolific engineer who built more than 300 buildings of the most diverse types. Carlo Mollino graduated in architecture in July 1931 at the Royal Superior School of Architecture in Turin.
