The Muscatine Micropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of two counties in east central Iowa, anchored by the city of Muscatine. The Muscatine Micropolitan Statistical Area is also a part of the Davenport-Moline, IA-IL Combined Statistical Area (CSA), which has a population of 474,226, making it the 90th-largest CSA in the nation. As of the 2000 census, the area had a population of 53,905 (though a July 1, 2009 estimate placed the population at 54,179). Atalissa, Iowa
Atalissa is a city in Muscatine County, Iowa, United States. The population was 296 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Muscatine Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Atalissa was platted in 1859. It was named by its founder, William Lundy, for a mining town in California, which in turn was named for an Indian queen Atalissa. From 1974 to 2009 Atalissa was the home of a few dozen intellectually challenged men who worked in a nearby turkey processing plant. They lived together in an old schoolhouse and were taken each workday to the plant, and after expenses were taken out, were paid no more than $65/month. They were removed and relocated by state agencies in 2009, after being found to be living in unacceptable conditions. A 2013 verdict awarded the men a total of $240 million in damages, since reduced to $50,000/man. Cranston, Iowa
Cranston was an unincorporated community in Muscatine County, Iowa, United States. History Cranston was a stop on the Milwaukee Road, which was removed in 1982, although little remains of the community today. Cranston's population was 42 in 1925. Name The original name of the site of the current town was ''Railroad Addition''. The town was later referred to as ''Nichols Station'' in reference to the previous holder of the town's site. Fredonia is a city in Louisa County, Iowa, United States. The population was 222 at the time of the 2020 census. It is part of the Muscatine Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Fredonia was laid out in 1836, by Alvin Clark, who had a squatters claim on the land and was surveyed by John Gilliland. It is located on the east side of the Iowa River, immediately below the junction of the Iowa and Cedar rivers. It is a part of section 20, township 75, range 4 west. It is said Alvin Clark and his brother Gibbs were the first settlers in Fredonia. As such it is one of the oldest continuously-incorporated towns in Iowa. It is sometimes claimed that Fredonia came near being the capital of Iowa and only lost by 1 vote.
