Murray's Sturgeon Shop is an appetizing store and neighborhood fixture in Manhattan's Upper West Side. It is located on Broadway (Manhattan), Broadway between 89th Street (Manhattan), 89th Street and 90th Street (Manhattan), 90th Street. The shop was founded by Murray Bernstein in 1945. A few years later, his brother, Sam, became a co-owner. The Bernsteins were born in Poland and immigrated to New York in the 1930s to escape anti-semitism. The store specializes in smoked fish, especially sturgeon, and caviar. In 1964, ''The New York Times'' described it as "one of the busiest places on Broadway" and praised its products as "first quality". An appetizing store, typically in reference to Jewish cuisine in New York City, particularly Ashkenazi Jewish cuisine, is a store that sells "food that generally goes with bagels", although appetizings can also be served with a variety of breads. Appetizings include smoked and pickled fish and fish spreads, pickled vegetables, cream cheese spreads and other cheeses. Most appetizing stores were opened in the later 1800s and the early 1900s. In 1930, there were 500 such stores in New York City; by 2015 there were fewer than ten. The concept started to experience a revitalization in the 2010s with the opening of new stores in Toronto, Philadelphia, and Brooklyn. Arthur J. "Artie" Cutler (died June 18, 1997) was an American restaurateur known for founding a number of popular New York City restaurants known for their "eclectic tastes and unlikely sites," according to ''The New York Times''. Biography Cutler was born in Brooklyn and grew up in New Hyde Park, New York. His family was in the food business: his father owned a grocery store and a diner, and his grandfather owned a herring stand. He graduated from Columbia University in 1965. Samuel Joel "Zero" Mostel (February 28, 1915 – September 8, 1977) was an American actor, comedian, and singer. He is best known for his portrayal of comic characters such as Tevye on stage in ''Fiddler on the Roof'', Pseudolus on stage and on screen in ''A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum'', and Max Bialystock in the original film version of Mel Brooks' '' The Producers'' (1967). Mostel was a student of Don Richardson, and he used an acting technique based on muscle memory. Sammy Cahn
Samuel Cohen (June 18, 1913 – January 15, 1993), known professionally as Sammy Cahn, was an American lyricist, songwriter, and musician. He is best known for his romantic lyrics to films and Broadway songs, as well as stand-alone songs premiered by recording companies in the Greater Los Angeles Area. He and his collaborators had a series of hit recordings with Frank Sinatra during the singer's tenure at Capitol Records, but also enjoyed hits with Dean Martin, Doris Day and many others.
