Madman Muntz
Earl William "Madman" Muntz (January 3, 1914 – June 21, 1987) was an American businessman and engineer who sold and promoted cars and consumer electronics in the United States from the 1930s until his death in 1987. He was a pioneer in television commercials with his oddball "Madman" persona; an alter ego who generated publicity with his unusual costumes, stunts, and outrageous claims. Muntz also pioneered car stereos by creating the Muntz Stereo-Pak, better known as the 4-track cartridge, a predecessor to the 8-track cartridge developed by Lear Industries. He invented the practice that came to be known as Muntzing, which involved simplifying otherwise complicated electronic devices. Muntz produced and marketed the first black-and-white television receivers to sell for less than $100, and created one of the earliest functional widescreen projection TVs. George Frederick Muntz (26 November 1794 – 30 July 1857) was an Business magnate, industrialist from Birmingham, England and a Liberal Party (UK), Liberal Party Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament (MP) for the Birmingham constituency from 1840 until his death. His father Philip Frederic Muntz came to England from Poland (now Lithuania) shortly after the French revolution, and lived at Selby Hall, Worcestershire. Philip Muntz established himself as a merchant and manufacturer in Birmingham, with the company, Muntz & Purden, specialising in steel toys. He married Catherine, daughter of his business partner Robert Purden, of Radford. Philip Henry Muntz (21 January 1811 – 25 December 1888) was a British businessman and Liberal politician. He was a leading figure in the politics of the rapidly growing industrial town of Birmingham in the mid-nineteenth century. Early life and family The Muntz family originated in modern Lithuania. Philip Henry was the son of Philip Frederick Muntz, who had moved from France to Birmingham in the late eighteenth century, and established the metal working business of Muntz & Purden. He married his business partner's daughter Catherine and made his residence at Selly Hall, Selly Oak, Worcestershire. Philip Henry was the youngest of the couple's children, born in the same year as his father's death. Following education at Shrewsbury School, Muntz entered business as a merchant in Birmingham. Laura Muntz Lyall
Laura Muntz Lyall (June 18, 1860 – December 9, 1930) was a Canadian Impressionist painter, known for her sympathetic portrayal of women and children. Life and work Laura Adeline Muntz was born at Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England in 1860, but her family emigrated to Canada when she was a child. She grew up on a farm in the Muskoka District of Ontario. As a young woman, Muntz's interest in art led to her take lessons in painting from William Charles Forster of Hamilton and to live and work at his school. Starting in 1882, she began to take classes at the Ontario School of Art in Toronto where she studied with Lucius Richard O'Brien, and later with George Agnew Reid. She studied briefly at the South Kensington School of Art in 1887, then returned to Canada to continue her studies with Reid. Muntz Car Company
The Muntz Car Company was an automobile manufacturer based in the United States. History The company was established in 1950 in Glendale, California by Earl "Madman" Muntz, a well known local used car dealer and electronics retailer. Muntz was assisted by Frank Kurtis, who had earlier attempted to produce a sports car under the Kurtis Kraft marque (the Kurtis Kraft Sport, which sold just 36 units by 1950). In 1951, Kurtis sold the license to manufacture the cars to Muntz, who rebadged them as the "Muntz Jet", extended the body to make it a 4-seater, and exchanged the Ford engine with a larger Cadillac V8. Later, this engine would be replaced with a less expensive Lincoln side-valve V8. The car, a sports coupe, was first built in Glendale, but manufacture soon moved to a new factory in Evanston, Illinois. Muntz Metal
Muntz metal (also known as yellow metal) is an alpha-beta brass alloy composed of approximately 60% copper, 40% zinc and a trace of iron. It is named after George Fredrick Muntz, a metal-roller of Birmingham, England, who commercialised the alloy following his patent of 1832. The alloy must be worked hot and is used today for corrosion-resistant machine parts. Alpha-beta (also called duplex) metals contain both the α and β phases. The α phase refers to a crystal structure that is face-centered cubic, while the β phase is body-centered cubic. Its original application was as a replacement for copper sheathing on the bottom of boats, as it maintained the anti-fouling abilities of the pure copper at around two thirds of the price. It became the material of choice for this application and Muntz made his fortune. Sir Philip Albert Muntz, 1st Baronet (5 January 1839 – 21 December 1908) was an English businessman and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1884 to 1906. Muntz was the son of George Frederic Muntz of Umberslade Hall, Warwickshire and his wife Eliza Price. He was a J.P. for Warwickshire. In 1881 he built Dunsmore House, a three-storey Grade II listed country house near Rugby. In 1884, Muntz was elected as a Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Warwickshire North but the constituency was abolished under the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885. He was elected as MP for Tamworth at the 1885 general election, and held the seat until his death in 1908 aged 69.
