Municipality Of Armidale
The City of Armidale was a local government area in the New England region of New South Wales, Australia, encompassing the regional city of Armidale from 1863 to 2000. It was proclaimed as the Municipality of Armidale on 13 November 1863 by Governor Sir John Young. The first aldermen were elected at a public meeting in the Armidale courthouse in December 1863, and the first mayor elected in January 1864. The number of aldermen was increased from six to nine in September 1868. It became the City of Armidale when it was deemed to be a city in March 1885. The boundaries of the city were expanded in 1960 to include areas formerly part of the surrounding Dumaresq Shire. Local government is the third level of government in Australia, administered with limited autonomy under the states and territories, and in turn beneath the federal government. New England (New South Wales)
New England is a vaguely defined region in the north of the state of New South Wales, Australia, about 60 km inland from the Tasman Sea. The area includes the Northern Tablelands (or New England Tablelands) and the North West Slopes regions. Armidale, New South Wales
Armidale is a city in the Northern Tablelands, New South Wales, Australia. Armidale had a population of 24,504 as of June 2018. Estimated resident population, 30 June 2018. It is the administrative centre for the Northern Tablelands region. It is approximately halfway between Sydney and Brisbane at the junction of the New England Highway and Waterfall Way. Geography Armidale is on the banks of Dumaresq Creek, in the Northern Tablelands in the New England region about midway between Sydney and Brisbane at an altitude (980 m AHD) ranging from 970 metres at the valley's floor to 1,110 metres above sea level at the crests of the hills. John Young, 1st Baron Lisgar
John Young, 1st Baron Lisgar (31 August 1807 – 6 October 1876) was a British diplomat and politician. He served as Governor General of Canada (1869–72), Governor of New South Wales (1861–67) and as Chief Secretary for Ireland (1853–55). From 1848 to 1870 he was known as Sir John Young, 2nd Baronet. Biography Young was born into an Anglo-Irish family in Bombay, India, eldest son of Sir William Young, 1st Baronet of Bailieborough Castle, who was a director of the East India Company. He was educated at Eton and Corpus Christi College, Oxford, graduating in 1829 and was called to the bar in 1834. He married Adelaide Annabella Tuite Dalton in 1835. Dumaresq Shire was a local government area in the New England region of New South Wales, Australia. Dumaresq Shire was proclaimed on 7 March 1906, one of 134 shires created after the passing of the '' Local Government (Shires) Act 1905''. The shire office was in Armidale. Armidale Dumaresq Council
The Armidale Dumaresq Council is a former local government area in the New England and Northern Tablelands regions of New South Wales, Australia. This area was formed in 2000 from the merger of the original City of Armidale with the surrounding Dumaresq Shire and abolished on 12 May 2016, where the council, together with Guyra Shire, was subsumed into the Armidale Regional Council with immediate effect. The combined former area covered the urban area of Armidale and the surrounding region, extending primarily eastward from the city through farming districts to the gorges and escarpments that mark the edge of the Northern Tablelands. The last mayor of the Armidale Dumaresq Council was Cr. Herman Beyersdorf until the council was abolished on 12 May 2016, amalgamating with Guyra Shire to form the Armidale Regional Council. William Proctor (Australian Politician)
William Consett Proctor (1850 – 23 November 1905) was an English-born Australian solicitor and politician. Early life He was born in Leicester to police constable John Proctor and Ellen Whelan. The family migrated to New South Wales around 1852. Proctor became a solicitor and settled at Armidale. On 30 November 1878 he married Kathleen Roberts, with whom he had two children, one of whom was the artist Thea Proctor. Proctor and Kathleen divorced in 1897, and he remarried Julia Cusack on 24 August 1903; they had four children. Political career He was elected an alderman in the Municipality of Armidale in February 1876, elected mayor in February 1877, an office he held until February 1880. In 1880, after finishing his term as mayor, Proctor left Armidale to practice as a solicitor in Sydney. Charles Wilson (Australian Politician)
Charles Graham Wilson (c. 1842 – 21 August 1926) was an Australian politician. Biography Wilson was born at Crossan House near Omagh, around 1842, the eighth of 12 children born to William Wilson and Elizabeth Graham. On coming to Australia, he initially lived at Warwick in Queensland, joining two of his brothers at their property, ''Ullathorne''. He married Irish-born Annie McBride, to whom he became engaged in Ireland, in Sydney in January 1869, traveling from Queensland to meet the boat she arrived on. They were married by one of Wilson's elder brothers, the Rev. William Wilson, a Wesleyan minister. Sydney Kearney
Sydney John Kearney (18 August 1870 – 16 April 1923) was an Australian politician. Born in Sydney to solicitor Timothy John Kearney and Sarah Margaret Trim, he attended New England Grammar School and St Joseph's College, after which he was articled as a clerk to his father in 1889. In 1894 he was admitted as a solicitor, partnering with his father until the latter's retirement in 1896, when he became a land agent; he was also secretary of the Armidale Federation League in 1899. On 10 May 1903 he married Harriet Johannah Hughes, with whom he had six children. From 1904 he was a member of the Farmers' and Settlers' Association, and at the 1903 Armidale by-election he was elected as a Liberal member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, holding the seat at the 1904 election.
