Mount O'Connell National Park
Mount O'Connell is a small national park in Queensland, Australia, 605 km northwest of Brisbane. The park is located in the Shoalwater drainage sub-basin within the Brigalow Belt bioregion. It straddles the slopes of Mount O'Connell. The ''Atalaya multiflora'' tree has been identified in the park. Marlborough is a rural town and coastal locality in the Livingstone Shire, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Marlborough had a population of 149 people. Geography The town lies on the Bruce Highway, north west of the city of Rockhampton. The town is a small service centre for the surrounding area, and one of a number of fuelling points on an otherwise isolated stretch of highway. To the south lies the Kunwarara Magnesite mine, which works one of the world's largest supplies of the mineral. Marlborough is famous for producing the world's finest chrysoprase, a semi-precious gem once coveted by Alexander the Great and Cleopatra. The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) is a business division of the Department of Environment and Science within the Government of Queensland. The division’s primary concern is with the management and maintenance of protected areas within Queensland, to protect and manage Queensland’s parks, forests and the Great Barrier Reef for current and future generations. Brigalow Belt
The Brigalow Belt is a wide band of acacia-wooded grassland that runs between tropical rainforest of the coast and the semi-arid interior of Queensland, Australia. The Interim Biogeographic Regionalisation for Australia (IBRA) divides the Brigalow Belt into two IBRA regions, or bioregions, ''Brigalow Belt North'' (BBN) and ''Brigalow Belt South'' (BBS). The North and South Brigalow Belt are two of the 85 bioregions across Australia and the 15 bioregions in Queensland. Together they form most of the Brigalow tropical savanna ecoregion. Atalaya Multiflora
''Atalaya multiflora'', known as the broad leaved whitewood, is a rare and endangered rainforest tree of the soapberry family native to eastern Australia. The habitat is in the drier rainforest areas, often on rocky slopes of basalt. However, it also is seen on sub-tropical lowland rainforest growing on alluvial soils. It was described by prolific botanist George Bentham in his ''Flora Australiensis'' in 1863, and was given the specific name ''multiflora'' because of the numerous flowers. Description A small tree up to 25 metres (80 ft) tall with a stem diameter of 40 cm (16 in). The base of the tree isn't quite cylindrical, but somewhat flanged and crooked. The bark is relatively smooth, coloured greyish brown. Small branches are thick, marked with lenticels and showing obvious leaf scars.
