Mount Huxley (Alaska)
Mount Huxley is a 12,216-foot (3,723 meter) glaciated mountain summit located in the Saint Elias Mountains of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, in the U.S. state of Alaska. The remote peak is situated northwest of Yakutat, Alaska, Yakutat, and west-northwest of Mount Saint Elias. The peak rises above the Columbus Glacier and Bagley Icefield to its north, the Tyndall Glacier to the south, and the Yahtse Glacier to the west. Precipitation runoff from the mountain drains into the Gulf of Alaska. The mountain was named in 1886 by English mountaineer Harold Ward Topham for Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895), an English biologist. The mountain was officially named Huxley Peak in 1917, but the name was officially changed to Mount Huxley in 1968 by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. The Saint Elias Mountains (french: Chaîne Saint-Élie) are a subgroup of the Pacific Coast Ranges, located in southeastern Alaska in the United States, Southwestern Yukon and the very far northwestern part of British Columbia in Canada. The range spans Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve in the United States and Kluane National Park and Reserve in Canada and includes all of Glacier Bay National Park in Alaska. In Alaska, the range includes parts of the city/borough of Yakutat and the Hoonah-Angoon and Valdez-Cordova census areas. This mountain range is named after Mount Saint Elias, which in turn was named in 1741 by the Danish explorer Vitus Bering. Briggs Hill () is a conspicuous ice-free hill, high, standing on the south side of Ferrar Glacier between Descent Glacier and Overflow Glacier in Victoria Land, Antarctica. It was charted by the British Antarctic Expedition, 1910–13, under Scott, and named by the United States Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Raymond S. Briggs, United States Antarctic Research Program meteorologist at McMurdo Station in 1962, and station scientific leader there in 1963. Mount Huxley is a mountain in the Sierra Nevada, in Fresno County. It is on the Goddard Divide in Kings Canyon National Park and rises above the Evolution Basin. Other nearby mountains in the group include Mount Darwin, Mount Fiske, Mount Haeckel, Mount Mendel, Mount Spencer, Mount Wallace, and Mount Lamarck. Mount Huxley (Tasmania)
Mount Huxley is a mountain located on the West Coast Range in the West Coast region of Tasmania, Australia. With an elevation of above sea level, the mountain was named by Charles Gould in 1863 in honour of Professor Thomas Henry Huxley. One of the smaller peaks in the West Coast Range, the mountain comprises a large outcrop and rock face on its southern side above the King River Gorge just west of the Crotty Dam – parts of which are visible along the river gorge from the West Coast Wilderness Railway where it commences following the King River. Goldfield Between April and June 1894 there was a goldfield situated on the slopes, and a syndicate that was discovered to have salted the mine site, with three alleged proponents, Isaac Bertram Barker, William Price and Antonio Briscoe, charged with fraud. On 1 July the Crown Solicitor told a magistrate that while the mine had undoubtedly been salted, there was insufficient evidence, and the charges were withdrawn. Location and ...
