Chalcis
Chalcis ( ; Ancient Greek & Katharevousa: , ) or Chalkida, also spelled Halkida (Modern Greek: , ), is the chief town of the island of Euboea or Evia in Greece, situated on the Euripus Strait at its narrowest point. The name is preserved from antiquity and is derived from the Greek χαλκός (copper, bronze), though there is no trace of any mines in the area. In the Late Middle Ages, it was known as Negropont(e), an Italian name that has also been applied to the entire island of Euboea. Euboea ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Εύβοιας) is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the administrative region of Central Greece. It consists of the islands of Euboea and Skyros, as well as a 260 km² area on the Greek mainland. Its land area is 4,167.449 km², whereas the total land area of the municipalities actually on the island Euboea is 3,684.848 km², which includes that of numerous small offshore islets (Petalies Islands) near Euboea's southern tip. Nea Artaki
Nea Artaki ( el, Νέα Αρτάκη) is a town and a former municipality on the island Euboea, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is a municipal unit, part of the municipality Chalcis. The municipal unit has an area of 23.015 km2. Nea Artaki is located north of Chalcis. The town was founded in 1923 by Greek refugees from the town of Erdek (Greek: Αρτάκη - ''Artaki''). The Greek National Road 77 links it with Chalcis and northern Euboea. Nea Artaki is located in a plain that is surrounded with mountains to the east and the North Euboean Gulf lies to the west. Dokos
Dokos ( el, Δοκός) is a small Greek island of the Argo-Saronic Gulf, adjacent to Hydra, and separated from the Peloponnese by a narrow strait called, on some maps, "the Hydra Gulf." It is part of the municipality of Ýdra (Hydra) in Islands regional unit and reported a population of 18 persons at the 2011 census. The island is populated only by some Orthodox monks and perennial sheep herders. The island is rocky, reaching a height of 308 metres. During the ancient times it was called Aperopia (Ἀπεροπία). Archaeology It has, since the ancient years, considered to be a strategic location. On the east side lie the ruins of a great Byzantine - Venetian Castle. Euboea
Evia (, ; el, Εύβοια ; grc, Εὔβοια ) or Euboia (, ) is the second-largest Greek island in area and population, after Crete. It is separated from Boeotia in mainland Greece by the narrow Euripus Strait (only at its narrowest point). In general outline it is a long and narrow island; it is about long, and varies in breadth from to . Greek National Road 44
National Road 44 ( el, Εθνική Οδός 44, abbreviated as EO44) is a single carriageway road in central Greece. It connects Thebes with Karystos on southern Euboea, via Chalcis and Eretria. The total length of the GR-44 is nearly 160 km. The highway lies in the regional units of Boeotia and Euboea. Route The west end of the GR-44 is in downtown Thebes, where it connects with the GR-3. It crosses Motorway 1 east of Thebes, and runs north to Chalcis. At Chalcis it crosses the Euripus Strait, and enters the island of Euboea. The GR-77 towards northern Euboea branches off. The GR-44 continues to the southeastern part of the island, passing along the south coast through the towns Eretria, Amarynthos and Aliveri. Beyond Aliveri it leaves the coast, and it runs south through Styra, ending in Karystos. Vathy, Euboea
Vathy ( el, Βαθύ) is a town and a community in the municipal unit of Avlida in the Euboea regional unit, Greece. It is situated on the Greek mainland, near the South Euboean Gulf, 6 km south of Chalcis. The Greek National Road 44 ( Thebes - Chalcis - Karystos) passes west of the town. The community Vathy consists of the town Vathy and the villages Mikro Vathy, Paralia and Ritsona. Population Ritsona The village Ritsona ( el, Ριτσώνα), population 535, is 7 km west of Vathy. The name Ritsona is believed to come from resin, referring to the pines that used to be abundant in the area.
