Motherland (Natalie Merchant Album)
''Motherland'' is the third solo album by Natalie Merchant, released in 2001. It was her last studio album released on Elektra Records. The album is musically eclectic, varying from Middle Eastern violin–reggae beat fusion "This House Is on Fire" to 10,000 Maniacs-sounding "Tell Yourself". Folk music, Folky "Motherland" precedes stylistically Merchant's next album, ''The House Carpenter's Daughter''. Originally, "The End" was supposed to appear on the album instead of "Not In This Life." Merchant noted that: I'd take out one song, 'Not in This Life,' '' she said, referring to a midtempo meditation on love, ''because it seems frivolous to me now. Natalie Merchant
Natalie Anne Merchant (born October 26, 1963) is an American alternative rock singer-songwriter. She joined the band 10,000 Maniacs in 1981 and was lead vocalist and primary lyricist for the group. She remained with the group for their first seven albums and left it to begin her solo career in 1993. She has since released seven studio albums as a solo artist. Early life Natalie Merchant was born October 26, 1963, in Jamestown, New York, the third of four children of Anthony and Anne Merchant. Carla Azar is an American drummer from Huntsville, Alabama and member of the band Autolux. She also plays guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, and sings. Rhodes Piano
The Rhodes piano (also known as the Fender Rhodes piano) is an electric piano invented by Harold Rhodes, which became popular in the 1970s. Like a conventional piano, the Rhodes generates sound with keys and hammers, but instead of strings, the hammers strike thin metal tines, which vibrate next to an electromagnetic pickup. The signal is then sent through a cable to an external keyboard amplifier and speaker. The instrument evolved from Rhodes's attempt to manufacture pianos while teaching recovering soldiers during World War II. Development continued after the war and into the following decade. "Just Can't Last" is the first single from Natalie Merchant's 2001 album ''Motherland''. The single version included more instruments and vocals than the original. The single was released in two packages. The Australian package included Merchant sitting under an apple tree in color. (The picture had been used on ''Motherland''). The regular package included a blue background with Natalie Merchant's name and the single name. Release "Just Can't Last" was released as a radio single in September 2001.
